Oh cool, a U34CH! This is one of my personal favorites.

Whats interesting about this particular unit, is that when they repainted this locomotive from the Bicentennial paint back into the NJ DOT paint (renumbering the into the 41XX series instead of the 33XX numbers), they used EL's Freight locomotive stenciling, instead of the normal passenger stenciling. As a result, the silver stripe did not line up with the window bands of the commuter cars like it should.

Check it out-

here is a typical U34CH

Charlie B Wrote:Gus, that's the Ohio River. Today all the cars have the scanner tags and they are scanned inbound and outbound, everything else is done by computers, I even think there may be scanners on the hump that allow the switches to be thrown automatically to route the cars to the right track for the right train.
Conway is not near the size it was as one of the yards was closed.

Thanks Charlie, for that info... Thumbsup

4/17/78 D&H Apollo in Bethlehem, Pa      Charlie
Looks like an Ex-Reading Company GP39-2 as the second unit! These locomotives were given to the D&H as part of the formation of Conrail. The D&H got a few locomotives from the various components roads (as well as some tracks and trackage rights) of Conrail.

Apparently, those GP39s were chosen because they were the newest power on the Reading.

the Lehigh Valley C420s also went to the D&H instead of Conrail.

I think there were a few D&H SD45s with a blue version of the Erie Lackawanna paint scheme as well. Apparently, the D&H was a major user of the GE locomotives, while the EL was moving towards EMD. The plan was to trade some EL U33Cs for the D&H SD45s. As I understand it, this trade never happened due to the Conrail merger.

Easter Sunday,1957.As they say "the railway never sleeps" so my father was working that day down at the Canadian National's Stuart St. yard.My uncle and his family were visiting that day,so we headed to the yard to see my father at work and to get a chance to ride the locomotives---as usual,my uncle brought along his camera. Here's a picture of my brother Danny and my cousin Butch in the cab of 0-18-A switcher #7431---while most kids were on Easter egg hunts, we were having a thrill of a lifetime

A year ago today the business train was through here on the way to the Derby and I caught this double stack westbound at Neeld Road while waiting for it.
