Caboose i drew and 3d printed, more pics to follow of printer and prints.

Any S gaugers with 3D printers should look at the site printables as there is a group who draw and print open soures 1:64 scale trains under the dragon railways group.

3D printing has become a hobby in its self
Used to be $1k for a decent printer now its a matter of hundreds for a decent sized printer.

It gets cheaper and better capabilities each year and the consumables are very affordable 20 to 40 dollars for a spool or pla fillament there are other materials as well and there are the resin printers just now become popular but you have chemicals and major fumes with that type, i use fff type fused fillament fabracation.
The great thing about 3D printers hobbists who have differnt printers can share stl files a universal file format each printer has its own slicer software to convert stl to its own file system.

I have looked at these but I don't know if I would be able to learn how to do it. Is there a group that would help with design for oddball creations too?

There are three alternitives, you can draw in 3d with cad and use a service such as shapeways to print out your designs they also have a store where you can buy prints designed by others, there are organizations called maker spaces most have 3D printers as well as other cool equipment you sign up for classes search to see if there is one in your area or if you know someone near by.
