Yes you read that correctly. SD40E is a rebuilt SD50 downgraded to a SD40-2. NS is slowly replacing all the worn out SD40-2's with these locomotives.

Cool Shots. When you going to be in the area again? I am always in lilly, pa which is about 15 miles from the curve. I took the picture of 6303 on the 10th of this month.

Hello Matthew---Doctor Wayne and I were in Pennsylvania for almost a week as part of the recent group gathering (Saturday) in Scranton---with all the warm hospitality and great train watching spots, you can be sure we'll be heading back again---we spent the first two days with Charlie B at the Kiski Junction and were treated to some outstanding railfanning---if you like,I'll try to post some shots later

I'm not into much of the modern railroad scene, but I was wondering why they are downgrading Sd50's to Sd40-2 standards?

Russ hope this helps: The SD40E's are rebuilds from SD50 donors....NS is rebuilding their SD50's, rerating them down to 3,000 HP, adding air conditioning, among other mechanical/electrical upgrades and renumbering them into the 6300 series .
So the SD40E's were originally SD50's, so are a larger/longer locomotive than a normal SD40/40-2.....the lack of rear 'porches' as well as the lack of dynamic brake blisters are a quick spotting feature difference from the SD40-2 helpers...
The SD40-2's days as Altoona-Johnstown Pa helpers are numbered.
Another interesting note is that the SD40E's assigned to helper service have been fitted with helperlink so as to allow capability for helpers to cut off on the fly....as Conrail was doing shortly before the NS takeover.
