When WILL people learn?!?!?!?!

Investigators are trying to determine how and why three teenage girls were struck and killed by a southbound train in Melbourne early Saturday night as they walked across a trestle spanning Crane Creek.

There must be something in human nature that makes people think it won't happen to them. I think I read that around here the other day a man was hit by a train while trying to put a penny on the rails. A few weeks ago, a woman got hit jaywalking across the street, when there was a crosswalk within 100 feet of where she was hit. I used to work next to light rail tracks, and am surprised I didn't see a pedestrian hit by a train. People would jaywalk across the street to McD's, and stop and stand on the tracks while they waited for the traffic to clear in the other direction. These werent kids or drunk homeless people, these were businessmen wearing suits and ties. It is unfortunate that it happens, but I don't lose sleep over people who die doing something that they elected to do. I will save my grief for the families of those individuals, or for the people who are caught in truly unfortunate situations.

The short answer...NEVER...The cycle of ever-recurring tragedies bears witness to this...As Sumpter250 says, I think we may well "work" ourselves to extinction....

Common sense, by it's nature, is only TRULY learned by experience. Fortunately, most of us survive our experiences (whether very minor or "Oh My God" adrenaline pumpers).

The boy that survived will now have common sense.

Had another one.......

Haven't learned the entire story yet, but in Norwood PA about 6 miles north of me, 2 high school girls......

One had a boyfriend that was killed by a truck about a month ago. Turns out that she was depresed.. her and her Best Friend decided to "walk the tracks" and wait for a trian.. Sad

As I said - Details are NOT in yet, but it just seems like a suicide.....

She also posted statements on her facebook page that she really missed him....

Link to all stories.....

There was a news article last week about a guy that got hit by a train, lived, and then got hit by another train a week later.

EDIT: Here's the link. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/23/california-man-hit-by-tra_n_474271.html">http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/2 ... 74271.html</a><!-- m -->

Cheers

Suicide is tough enough to deal with, but why do so many suicides have to hurt "strangers" who are completely unrelated to the reasons for committing the suicide.

The utter blackness of the abyss of suicide, softly, quietly, welcomes. It takes no small amount of strength to turn from that abyss, face, and own life, and life is sweeter for having been there.
Some paths are not meant to be followed, or ever returned to. There is always....a better choice.

I often read about these things and think, "God is cleansing the gene pool."

Cold? Hard? Tragic? Yeah, probably. But think about it. Try to answer the question, "Why would someone commit to crossing a busy railroad trestle where there is no escape for over a hundred yards (based on the video od the river crossing) and think they could make it? I believe the key word in that sentence is five from the period ... period! Sad

As the Darwin Awards will verify, it is a good thing that some people choose to eliminate themselves from the gene pool.
I only know what I know, and I don't understand very much of it, either.
