I heard http://www.the-gauge.net/forum/index.php contains some good ones.

Seriously, how much room do you have available and what kind of theme are you after? Google might help.

Well, O.K. ... but how 'bout another clue ... besides the one about HO scale (which you mentioned) and the one about a shelf layout (which we assumed by the topic of this thread.) So ... steam, diesel, 1930's, modern day, one foot wide by six feet long, 30" wide by thirty feet around three walls, 40' box cars, 80' tri-level car carriers, little 40-Tonners, GP15-1's, Interurbans and boxcabs with overhead wire ... What are you interested in? When it comes to layout design, it isn't really a one-plan-fits-all scenario, at least not if you want to build something that will be fun to build and enjoyable to operate when you get enough built to run some trains!

So ... we'd like to help you ... but you're going to have to help us first by giving us a little more to work with . Big Grin

Well im running modern era 1990-2000 area. I have already built a shelf layout that is kinda a U shape and i was looking for something that will cap off the side that is 2ft wide by 7ft long. In order to help ill get pics on here once i mail them to my supervisor at work. ( a train nut with no space to build )

Harry ... I'm not sure why you must mail them to your supervisor at work ... why get him (or her) involved ... try this ... it's so easy even I can do it! It's even less complicated if you just have all the windows you will need open as tabs across the top of the Web Surfer Window!

1. Go to PhotoBucket http://photobucket.com/ and open a free account. (just follow the instructions.) Next, (I tell you this 'cuz I had to learn by making mistakes) make an album called "My shelf layout" or whatever you want to call it ... just don't operate from the initial spot you land because you can't organize your images as well from there. And if you must move them later to organize them, it breaks the link to anything you've already posted and you have to go back and edit and re-paste the new link to the image ... it's a pain ... I had to do it on my "Building a Small Fleet of Very Small Cabooses" thread!

2. On your computer, take each image to MS Picture Manager or some sort of image manager program and reduce the size of the image to either 800x600 or even better, 640x480 and put the edited ones in a separate file where you can easily find them.

3. Now go back to PhotoBucket and upload the images from your computer to Photobucket, making sure that you are keeping them organized (remember ... if you move them, you will "break the link" and your images will vanish from where you eventually post them!) When you've up-loaded all your images, minimize PhotoBucket and switch to Big Blue.

4. Now you can start a thread here at Big Blue and when you get to where you want an image, maximize your minimized PhotoBucket window, put the curser over the image you want, when you see the four codes, slide down to the "img" label, right-click-save, toggle back to Big Blue, right-click-paste where you want to insert the image and ...

There you go ... easy peasy!

Anyway ... just give it a try ...

No he has nothing to do with what goes on here he just wanted photos of the layout so i figured kill 2 birds with one stone 35 Any way this is the area that was torn down mostly as you can still see a bit of the old layout still sits there.

If you are looking for ideas to "cap off" an existing shelf layout, we really need to see what is already existing or what the plan for the existing shelf layout is.

I don't see a yard on your layout, but in my opinion yards are often not as important for a model railroad as modelers think. One foot wide by 6 feet long won't be nearly enough space for a yard, but could include a nice industry. Also do you have an interchange track on your layout? You could change out rolling stock on an interchange track between operating sessions so that you aren't constantly shifting the same cars around. Do you have an industry in mind that you would like to model?

So basically you need 2' x 7' of layout to complete the U shape across the top of the U and make it into an O, right?
