Visit to the LHS.

Morning,

I usually make the habitual trip up to George's Trains every Saturday morning just to get my weekly fix. I normally don't make any large purchases, just pick up some odds and ends for my scratch building needs. The store parking lot sits right to a C.N. Main Line. Usually, like clockwork every Saturday at 9 am a train will coming rolling through. This Saturday, I decided to snap off some pictures with my Black Berry.

It was a west bound train moving at a good clip going down hill and the crane on the flat car went by pretty darn quick.

Perhaps I'll make this a regular part of my visits. I usually roll out of bed pretty early on the weekends... sure beats tiptoeing around the house in the mornings. :?

As I look at the shots, one element continues to jump out at me - that ever so model-genic culvert! A person would need to study that scene only a few minutes in order to get the basic elements like the colors and textures beyond the culvert itself, but it would be a very realistic touch for any modern era layout.

Looks like a nice place to watch a train roll by...except for the nasty cold drizzly weather! Too bad you didn't catch that flat car load with a better shot. Thanks for sharing.

I may not be a rivet counter, but I sure do like rivets!

Two questions guys -

What's on that flat?
Why so many hatches on those covered hoppers?

Now what are the odds that I would take a photo of a hopper that you would photograph 10 years earlier? And that train was moving pretty fast, so it was by mere chance that I happened to snap that photo.

I think I'll go buy a lottery ticket this week... Confusedhock:

*** edit... oh wait never mind. I see by the link provided, that you did not take that earlier pic of 2045. Ah, well... still poor.

I can answer your first question. It was a huge crane truck. Almost just like this one... which also happens to be on a flat car.

And that covered hopper is for carbon black - not sure why, but they all had multiple small hatches. From what little I've seen written about it, it's either a very fine powder or sometimes pelletised, and is loaded and unloaded with specialised equipment, since it can be easily contaminated by many other substances.
Cars used to ship it are used only for carbon black, and when shipped in non-specialised cars, that material usually contaminates the car to a degree that the car is not useable for any other commodity.
