Photo tour of a Norwegian narrow gauge museum railway
#1
Just wanted to share some pics from a trip to Sørumsand and the Tertitten museum railway today.

Sørumsand station, this building is a reconstruction of Bjørkelangen station as it was in 1896:

At Sørumsand there is a crane dating back to 1919 but now fully restaured. This was used for transloading freight in wooden containers from narrow gauge cars onto normal gauge cars, and was the first crane of this type in Norway. To the left is the engine house:

And away we are:

Just outside Sørumsand station, the museum line crosses under the NSB main line:

The train arrives at Fossum station:

This narrow gauge railway was originally 57 km long, but now there is only a few km of track left, and Fossum is the end of the line.

The coaches are uncoupled from the engine, and end markers are put in place before the engine runs around and couples to the other end of the train:

The conductor walks in front of the engine to make sure no kids (or adults) get in the way during the runaround:

All passengers are aboard, and the train is ready to depart back to Sørumsand:

After the train has left, Fossum station is once again an empty and quiet place in the middle of nowhere:

An overhead view of the train on its return trip to Sørumsand. Note that the tank engine now is running in reverse, as there is no turntable at Fossum:

Arriving at Sørumsand station:

The engine is once again uncoupled from the coaches to make the runaround move before the next departure:

I enjoyed that excursion, Svein. Thumbsup Thumbsup

I thought, upon seeing that loco, that it must be fairly modern and a quick google search confirmed that impression: Henschel 1950, and the last built for the NSB. Very nicely maintained and nicely photographed, too.
Is it a coal or an oil burner? The semi-diamond stack, I'm guessing, acts as a spark arrestor, so my guess is that she's coal-fired. With a straight stack, she'd look even more modern.

The three steam engines still on UHB (Urskog Hølands Banen) are all coal fired - tank engines with a coal bunker at the rear end of the cab, and water tanks along the side of the boiler.

The three are :
#4 - Setskogen - built 1909
#6 - Høland - built 1925
#7 - Prydz - built 1950

The nick name "tertitten" for the line is based on the word Norwegian word for "tertiary line" - i.e not exactly a well traveled mainline :-)

I'm glad you liked it Wayne Smile It was a nice trip, my only regret is I didn't take more trackside photos. There is also a middle station, Bingsfos, but to get to it you would have to walk along the line (or take the train, duh... 35), which we didn't do this time.

However, I have some pics from Bingsfos taken back in July 2006. No trains running that day, så I walked along the line from Fossum. Bingsfos has a small picnic area, and the train usually pauses there for a while on the return trip. When running two trains there is also scheduled stops here:
