We are wondering what you think about this....

It's a great logo and something that I can imagine on an AAR box car. I think that we should have several logos, be they variations on yours or others in order to add a sense of history to the railroad.

Re: History -

I can see Les' original logo (top of last page) as a more modern variant. For some reason, I cannot see it right now though... Sad

Yeah, it looks like it was deleted. It seemed to be a variation of the Seattle Mariners Logo. I would actually go with your logo and change up the font depending on the era.

It also helps to have a back-story/history of the railroad. This can affect paint schemes and logos.

When you are pondering names for our as yet unnamed railroad the important thing to remember is it will be a railroad and not a holding company like Rail America.

I found the problem and fixed it, I think.

I don't want to be miss understood but I feel the line"from anywhere to nowhere and back" was good as it covers it all with no specific location. Where does your railroad actually go? Guess what tomorrow morning it will be right where it started from. It can also be physically located anywhere in the world including your dreams.

Andrew,Global Rail is indeed a holding company that owns several railroads worldwide..I was thinking it would make better sense then a short line since short lines go point to to point within a few miles..Global Rail is generic enough to connect layouts in all countries. On the plus side there would be no need for painting any equipment-just add a small GRI (decals )under the cab number.

Thanks for the info. Catt's idea (see above) as originator, was to name a railroad, not a holding company. But I like the simplicity of your idea - one small decal is easier than painting new cars/motive power. Wink

A holding company defeats the whole puropse which was to give us a viable railroad. If we are going to do a holding company we might as well just trash this idea and stick with what we already have, which in all actuality is nothing.

Well, I think we have a good suggestion in the NW&SE Line. It's a viable name - if a bit tongue-in-cheek. But that seems to fit with other things we do here at Big Blue (e.g. GERN, Pandorum, dinosaurs & aliens Wink ). It's not a holding company. It has lots of potential to be adapted to any time period (and we have logos and tag lines for at least two eras already) and any location (members from around the world).

What is the next step(s)?

Brakie that is exactly why I chose short line. It by definition cant be inter continental and an inter continental RR can't be a short line if it is world wide. It is just a little twist I threw in. When is the vote going to take place?

First,A short line is just that a short line not a major world wide player.

Looking at the growth of the G&W RR it changed its name to Genesee & Wyoming Inc which now owns 63 railroads including 2 in foreign countries.

I used this idea for Global Rail.

John,Again instead of painting locomotives and freight cars all one needs to do is add GRI under the number-anybody can do that without the need to buy a undec locomotive or repaint a locomotive and they can use alphabet decals for GRI.

It would be a family of railroads like GWI .

Again a short line doesn't conjure up a vision of a global type railroad ..

And as far as fantasy do we actually need to do another fantasy ??

What's with this shortline thing? This railroad is meant to be a worldwide railroad(way), not some down on it's luck shortline barely surviving in a small market place served by the big guys.

I seriously believe y'all need to get shortline railroad out of your collective minds and concider the global aspect of this idea. Some food for thought if your bound and determined to come up with holding companys."Norfolk Southern RR" is a holding company.

As for painting and decaling cars and locos ,Why? you can but undec cars in most of the scales (some you can get data only) why paint them ,a nice glossy finish, decals , followed but a matte or flat over coat and the rolling stock is done.

Locos? pick out a colour scheme you like ,paint out the origonal name with matching paint and decal to your hearts content. If you need an example Google Canadian Pacific or Florida East Coast to see what they both did with ex UP units.
There are other roads that have done this too.

Ok, your turn to agree or disagree. Eek

My thought on the name I came up with was the name contradicts itself. I was just trying to add a little fun in the name. This is not a real railroad. I thought it was fictitious to have some fun with. I am truely sorry for causing so much grief Big Grin I think I will ask that my suggested name be withdrawn and I will just back out of this.
