Weathered freight cars for Sweethome Alabama

I started building Sweethome Alabama exactly 2 years ago and have now reached the stage where the trackwork, electrics and scenery are pretty much complete, so much so that I have accepted an invite to attend a Model Railway exhibition in November.

I now have to concentrate on detailling and weathering the rolling stock which will run on the layout.

The latest freight car to enter service is a TTX excess height boxcar (Athearn Genesis 60' Gunderson). although a bit new for the layout (2007 build), it's a very nice model and the graffiti was added by a friend at work, who is a wargaming figure painter. The prototype photos I found showed very clean cars, but many of them had been 'tagged' with graffiti, possibly within weeks of entering service.

Looking good Jon, I think it is a good idea to have one or two 'clean' cars in the fleet. And as you said, it probably gets tagged with graffiti within weeks of service. I was just driving past a yard near Amsterdam two days ago (I was in the Netherlands for work), and saw one of the new high speed passenger trains parked up. These trains haven't even entered service yet, they're still being delivered and tested for the new highspeed link between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, with a branch off to Brussels. Several of the carriages of this train were covered in man high graffiti almost their entire length...
I have to say, these new trains deserve it, as who ever the designer was,must have spent too much time in one of amsterdam's coffee shop, they are UGLY, and that's not an understatement. Look's to me like something in one of the Disney "Cars" movies! Look at the "face" on that thing! Perhaps one of the vandals will spray paint appropriate facial details on one of those

Then it will start to look like it should belong on Chuginton Railway. Such a gay series, trains defying the laws of physics, pfft. Talking trains I dont have a problem with, but flying trains? Never.

It will nearly fly, the service speed will initially be 155 mph, so those wings may actually not be such a bad idea :-)
