A weekend trip to a MR show in Bergen
#1
This weekend my girlfriend Vigdis and I went on a trip to the city of Bergen on the west coast of Norway, to visit the annual model railroad show. While we were there, we also took a ride on the Fløibanen Funicular. It's just a short ride to the top of Fløyen Mountain, and offers a spectacular view over the city.

Bergen is known as the "Rain City" here in Norway; it rains 242 days a year, with an annual precipitation measuring 2.250mm (89in) on average! However, on Saturday the weather was splendid, as you can see:

On the roof of the top station there is a cool model of the funicular, which displays the actual movements of the cars:

Early Monday morning we headed back east over the mountains. The weather forecast had predicted snow in the mountains a week earlier, so we changed to snow tires before we left home on Friday. However, there were many people on vacation that had ignored the forecast, and we heard on the news that hundreds of cars were stranded in the mountains or had slid off the roads trying to drive home on summer tires. This happens every year without exception, I wonder why some folks never learn..!

Wow, what a beautiful area to be in, fantastic views. And super shots of those layouts. Great detailed scenery, impressive to say the least. Thank you for posting them.

As far as snow in the mountains, we here in the desert don't have that problem until we head up to northern Arizona and forget that it snows heavy up there. It's still in the high 90's and is expected to hit 100 this week down here, yet they've had their first snow up in Flagstaff and I'm sure a lot of us desert dwellers will up up there totally unprepared.

Great pics Svein!
My family and i visited Bergen a couple of years ago when we made a trip with the Hurtigruten. I am astonished to see the Floi Banen has got new cars and was modernized. And glad to see that the working model is still there.

Svein, great pictures and wonderful details of layouts.
And thank you for pictures of Floyen funicular and Bergen. My wife and me have visited a few times Bergen, last time with a cruise liner. Bergen is one of nicest cities in Scandinavia I think, we have the best memories to this city and Norway.
Thank you for pictures!

All I can say is I wish they made North American Catenary sets like they do in Europe.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked it.

I've been to Bergen once before, but didn't get to ride on the Fløybanen Funicular back then. I've never taken the Flåmsbana railway, but it's a dream waiting to come true. We actually discussed it in the car on our way home yesterday, as we drove right past Flåm, that we should take a train ride from Oslo to Myrdal on the Bergen line, and the Flåmsbana from Myrdal down to Flåm. There's also an express boat sailing the fjords between Flåm and Bergen, which would make for a great round trip before we head back to Oslo by train.
