I've seen GERN mentioned on several members layout, and I really don't know what GERN is. I thought it was a real industry at first, but now I think it's some sort of inside joke amongst members! Can someone help clear this up for me? Thanks. :?

Hi,

I should probably let Wayne answer that, but here is a thread that has some basic information about GERN, the fictional industry that a number of us enjoy modeling. Doctorwayne's description of the orignin of GEN is on the second page of the above linked thread. Feel free to join in the fun!

Fortunately, GERN increases neuron response by 3% thereby increasing your long term memory and short term memory retrieval.
So once you know the answer, you won't forget.

Absolutely - Doc Brown would not have gotten anywhere (or any WHEN) without the miracle of Gibson's Extraordinary!

GERN can be as real as you wish to make it, Al. As you can see in the links, it's meant to be a traffic generator and something with which to have a little fun. You can model it or have it as an industry elsewhere which sends/receives to/from industries which you do model.
Plant design and products produced are up to the individual, keeping in mind, of course, that this is meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek. There's not much in the way of rules, although if you wish to build or letter rolling stock for GERN, I would appreciate it if you would contact me for car numbers - this is merely to avoid duplicates.
If you're interested in receiving GERN advertising and promotional material, PM your e-mail address to me and I'll send it out. There is, of course, no obligation for you to model GERN.

Thanks for clearing all of this GERN stuff up; I think I may include a GERN facility on my layout plans.

Ahhh, but without GERN flux flowing in the capacitor, and the resulting 3% more effective power generation and transfer, you would have needed 1.2463 gigawatts. And everyone knows that is just crazy talk.

Great Scott , Andrew , you are indeed correct ....I must have had a short circuit in my bionic implants ....! ....almost unravelled the very essence of my space time continuum .

Wayne,
Do you think it would benefit my coal dealer to get some GERN treated coal, for 3% greater BTU content? I am sure that the B&P will need GERN treated journal lube as well, for 3% less rolling resistance in the freight car trucks.

I am currently rebuilding the part of my layout where Gern is located. It is now partially in operation and generating some traffic again. A local just went out with orders to drop one boxcar, pick up two box cars, a covered hopper and a tank car. Some days it seems that Gern is the only industry on my layout when the local freight goes out.
