I believe that the National Railway Museum in York, England is the world's largest rail museum...and possesses the largest collection of steam locomotives. They have everything from 1830s locomotives to the Evening Star (last new British Steam locomotive)...as well as diesels and famous locomotives.

Twice I've had the pleasure of visiting there, and I plan to return a few more times. If you ever find yourself in England, I highly encourage stopping by.

When you walk in, you are greeted by a turntable...and they have demonstrations all over the museum throughout the day.

This locomotive is very fortunate to have been preserved. She operated on the London, Brighton, & South Coast. I've traveled the entire length of the Brighton Line (but starting a Victoria instead of London Bridge), and really enjoyed it. The colour was probably a bit brighter when new...

This sure looks like Midland maroon to me...

There are many of these pacifics which have survived...and this is the best description I've ever seen of a steam locomotive...plus the drivers revolve so that you can see how the valve gear functions...

The British did build 4-8-4s...they just didn't have any until the Chinese donated this British product to the NRM.

This decapod was built in the same year that the N&W became the last class 1 to end major steam operations. The BR pulled the plug (or perhaps dropped the fires) on its steam in 1967. I had the good fortune of seeing one of her sisters under steam later in the trip.

and it is next to their replica of the Rocket. What's left of the original Rocket is in the London Science Museum...alongside the oldest steam locomotive in the world.

The classic V2, the Green Arrow. I love the LNER green.

And a predecessor to the Flying Scotsman was near bye...a Stirling Single...

Not certain, but I believe the engine on the right is from the SECR...very pretty...and pulling a Pullman. The SECR, LBSC, and L&SWR became the Southern when the national groupings occurred.

I agree that the museum in York is one of the very finest I have ever visited. There are rooms with parts, thousands of part of various locos and rolling stock along with just about anything else you can think of having to do with railroads. It was very interesting to me to be able to walk along the platform just like you were at the local railroad station and look into each car of the royal train.

When I was there, and it's been about 8 years ago, there was also an HO/OO model railroad display in an adjacent building to the York train station. It was very extensive, but also very tired looking. Needed a good dusting Smile

That's the local model railway club. I saw them, but didn't have a chance to visit. I was really surprised at how much the museum had changed since my previous trip in 1997.

Gee, I just noticed that you join up here the day after I did and I haven't been very good about visiting the site. I think I had well over 1000 posts on the old Gauge, but just have been too busy to even get interested in working on my own layout that has been sitting here gathering dust for over a year,

Currently, all of my work is on my computer. It's a laptop, and so it is practically an extension of me now days. Because my email is gmail, which updates in real time, I have a steady stream of distractions coming my way in the form of new posts to read. Since I've been working from dawn to dusk, I'm spending more time at my computer and less at my work bench. Nope

Visited the musem a couple of times on the way back from Sunderland, the OO layout is looking a bit tired and needs a dust off and rebuild in places.

Nice pics.
I have a question?
Whats up with this guy. Looks like he's trying to ditch this car.
Stolen? Insurance scam?

Hi Eightyfan1,

Not sure why the guy is dumping his car ..... could be to depict a joyrider dumping it ?

Yep, it does need some de-dusting and maintenance. Nice to see a sizable British layout. I really admire the layouts which are just a super detailed junction, but I prefer for my trains to be able to go somewhere (like your layout, upnick!).

Thanks for adding your pictures of their club layout! Shame it doesn't have any LBSC stuff in the photos, but it isn't a club in Brighton Goldth

Please drop a Scrumpie for me, since they don't sell them here Cheers

Yep, I stopped by your website and saw Morganth...love the view of a 6-axle UP dievil and a 3-axle "shunter". My layout has been neglected as well. I'll work on it of a couple weeks and then forget about it for a couple months. I really prefer building trains to building my layout. I only need the layout when either a new piece is finished or when visitors stop by.

I agree the York NRM is superb. Even though I only live about 100 miles from it, I had not visited for many years, so we made a visit last year. My pictures can be found here: http://alansgallery.fotopic.net/c1775951.html

You did a much better job of getting fine photos than I did. I had repeated troubles with the lighting and focus that day. Thank you for linking to your photos as well.
