Shipping to others
#31
Looking at your list of shippers and consignees on the other post, how does someone say I have a car I want to send? Should it be via a post on that thread? That way, it might prevent multiple offers.

Also, it seems to me that it might be worthwhile to specify what length and era of cars you want, or say you have no preference. If I decided to ship a 50-foot cushion underframe boxcar with COTS stencils, a guy with a 1940s layout might not appreciate it! By the same token, if my particular industry will only take 40-foot cars, I might not know what to do with a 50-foot.

Should we do this list in a pdf file or an excel file format (converted to pdf) so we could list each participant's manufactureres and what they need and/or produce?

This aould let everyone see a condensed form for each participant without having to scroll through a thread that could be a few pages long....

Also, I guess I should mention the HO car tour that basically got stalled a few times due to various unforeseen circumstances. The shipping of a car or 2 doesn't always go well. We even were sending the cars Priority mail. But it was Human error not Postal Service error that produced the gremlins Smile Smile

Russ Bellinis Wrote:I think Tony Koester and Alan McClelland used to simulate whole trains moving from one layout to the other back when Tony still had the Allegheny Midland. I think Tony had a set of locomotives decorated for the V&O and Alan had a set decorated for the AM. I'm not sure if they went so far as to send each other a consist list, but each would have a train from the other railroad in staging and when the train left the V&O, Alan would call Tony and let him know that it was on the way. That would be the signal for the train to come out of the AM staging and cross the AM. When the AM train that was scheduled to go over the V&O went off the layout into staging, then Tony would call Alan.

I would think that actually shipping freight cars from one location to another risks damage, and possibly getting lost in shipping.

I don't intend my post to be a hijacking or distraction to the thread but I think this is what may have prompted my thinking before about "metaphorical shipping". Seems like interest in actually mailing rolling stock to each other is taking off so I'll wish you well in the venture! Thumbsup

Ralf this might be short lived, but interesting to try.

I don't know how to do that but I was thinking along the same lines. If that is done can information be added as we go?

I guess if you see a product on my line you could receive on your layout you would make a request for it and if you had car requirements it could be made at that time. Then if I have rolling stock I would be willing to send it goes into motion. If not you could send a car to pick it up.I guess some of this could be PM until order is complete then post it. and the travel photos to follow. as far as modern or 1940s is concerned to me it would be no problem. The idea is to see you rolling stock on another layout. if you sent a modern high cube car I would put it a few cars back in the train if you wanted for photos unless you wanted to see it behind a real locomotive Big Grin . Post your information and we can try it and see if it works.

Yeah - It can be done, but the setup is a bit of work. We just have to see who is interested and get a list going.

I have a possible solution. What if we had a few Meridian & Greenwich cars with the same numbers on each layout. That way, everybody has the car on their layout and you just email the waybill. If we do the cars in yellow or white, we can create a download on the website and print out decals.

I think that would defeat one of the main goals of the program, actually exchanging cars and seeing the photo of your car on the other guy's layout, or enoying having that car on your layout. After all, how many of us already have Athearn Bluebox car 123654, those who have it, let's pretend we're exchanging it. If paperwork is your main goal, I guess that would work, but it doesn't sound satisfying to me.

It looks like Les and I have come up with an interchange, so look for a post illustrating my first moves in getting this out within the next several days! I think Les would agree that we're in pilot mode here, seeing what works and figuring out the wrinkles, so let's see how this falls out!

I'm for a car exchange. What others are talking about is the logistics of a car exchange. I can decal a car this weekend if need be. I have a car exchange yahoo group for the NYC Metropolitan area set up, just not any members yet.
