UP/UPY SD38-2 with three vents
#1
Initiated by my new Kato UPY SD38-2 835 did I start to look after some photos of UP/UPY Gp38-2 in the internet.
No problem but I found a couple of engines (e.g. UPY825) called UP/UPY SD38-2 in the 8XX road number range with three/3 vents at the end of the long hood. It is my understanding the 38 has two/2 vents. Three vents are beside other differences typical for the GP/SD40 machines.
Are there EMD build SD38-2 with three vents or is that the result of one of so many rebuilds? May be down graded SD40-2 because some of the suspicious engines have four stacks in groups of two?

The nice thing about rrpicturearchives is that you can get a history of the loco -- see http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/Locopi ... ?id=146558 This says it's a former MP SD40-2 that had apparently been de-turboed, with a late style paper air filter box added. I think you're better off doing this from an Athearn SD40-2 and going with a UP ex-SP or CNW SD38-2 for the Kato unit.

And I'd love to see photos!! There are SD38-2s at West Colton, but they don't leave the hump -- they don't even get as far as Pepper Avenue. The bowl trimmers are SD40-2s.

Sorry, I have been blind. Could have checked my assumption within seconds Confusedhock: The photos document the massive use at Colton and North Plate. Those engines are hump yard pushers.
But I got the Kato unit intentional due to the fine Kato drive. This is the freelance part of freelance 2012 357

ps. It must have been an unusual day when the 806 made a trip to Vernon coupled to a Genset.http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPic...id=3081969

I did look a bit more for the UP28xx/UPY8xx and found out the two groups 800-805 (former C&IM) and 830-835 (former SP) are true SD38-2. Those are the number groups KATO used for their four models. UtahRails is a very helpful side for that purpose too.
The use of the engines was and is mainly hump yard service. At least the C&IM engines have been explicitly bought for that use while the SP engines are a "gift" from the merger. Some of the engines lack snow plows and ditch lights. It is unlikely that they ever got out of their home yards. But some of them are "fully road equipped".

Correction: my remarks about the "806" to be in Vernon is wrong. The photo shows the UP 806 a GP38-2 in Vernon while we are talking about the UPY 806 a SD38-2.

There's also UPY 806-815, formerly UP 2806-2815, ex CNW. Both the CNW and SP units were always hump locos, the SP I believe exclusively at West Colton.

I did concentrate on the prototypes KATO used for it's models. The CNW have, like the Athern GP15-1 models, often a bell in the nose. A very prominent detail to identify former CNW engines. This is a nice page about the UP SD38 and many other "switchers" http://utahrails.net/all-time/upy-01.php#sd38-2-upy836

The UPY 800-805 have four stacks (two double stacks) on all UP and UPY photos. All older photos from the same units under the C&IM ownership show only tow very short stacks. I assume UP did some modifications. May be only the exhaust system got modified?
Is it known what else has been modified by UP on the C&IM units?

ps. The KATO model of the UP 2804 has only two stacks.

pps. I am glad you did not ask if I refrain from further SD38-2 after we have concluded that they never have been in Vernon Wink

But we've also seen RJ Corman and Saint Maries locos on your layout, and nobody's asked not to see photos of those!! It's a good layout, and photos of anything come out well!

UP converted a bunch of MP SD40-2's to SD38-2's for yard service. UP even bought a McCloud River RR SD38 to rebuild into hump service.
This picture was taken in Roseville August 3rd, 2002. I don't know how many are still there because they received some 6 axle Genset units a few years ago.
