Adding weight to a Spectrum...
#1
Hi all

I recently purchased a Bachmann Spectrum 2-6-6-2 and I noticed that my front set of wheels need a bit more weight. Oh, it climbs fine, but you can see the boiler rising up and the wheels sometimes actually break contact with the rail.

I have some weight ready to go, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to open this bad boy. I have the explosion right here next to me even now, and I cannot see where I need to start to get into the boiler.

If anyone has this engine and has a tip or trick, let me know! I love how this guy pulls, but can't help but think that it would be even better with just a skosh.

Thanks,

George

I answered George's question in a PM, but for anyone else with one of these locos, simply pop off the steam dome - you'll find a screw hidden beneath it. Eek There may be others at the rear of the loco, too, beneath the cab, but it's been a while since I've had mine apart and don't recall. 35 Misngth

I put a tsunami decoder in my bachmann 2-6-6-2 and found the lites didn't work, I had a real hard time accepting the after-fact that there was a small screw under the thingy that held the boiler chassis in place. In the long run I had found the lite wires had been pinched and grounded. I also found the pilot wheels a bit light.George I would appreciate if you can take pics as you go for adding the weight as I too will need to do this.

No problem. I find myself taking pics of most things I attempt in this hobby. It comes in handy for 2 reasons...

1.) As a record of what I have done, how far I have come since attempting something (like trees... those first 100? eeeewwwwww.....)

and 2.) As a fail safe. "How did I do that?" or "How does this thing go back together?!?"

I will be trying this coming weekend, as I won't be able to get to my club's meeting...
