A home for Denny's
#1
Don't be shocked, I actually did something on my layout that wasn't part of a challenge... well sort of Icon_lol . Back in July of '09, I scratchbuilt a Denny's as part of a challenge. The first two pics here shows it as I built it, a diorama. So here's the part that's not part of a challenge, after four years, I finally planted Denny's on my layout. :o It looked like the only place I had room enough for it and still maintained most of the parking lot around it. Diners now have a great view of the passing trains... well they will once I get that part completed. 357

The buildings in the background are on two layers to give them some depth. Some are pasted on the backdrop, the rest are on a piece of foamboard to bring them forward a bit.

Denny's is great!
I usually wake up in the US the first morning after arrival at about 4am due to jet lag and time shift. That is the perfect time to drive to the next Denny's and get a huge american breakfast. That is my tradition since more then 30 years Thumbsup

It's a great model, and nostalgic, too. After many, many years of service to the community, the Denny's here in Canon City closed forever about two months ago.

May all of your LP patrons enjoy those great breakfasts and the endless coffee. Thumbsup

I just realized, the parking lot is empty, :o a rarity for any Denny's that is open 24/7. I can fix that... Big Grin

Yeah, we usually get to our local Denny's at least once a week, we get there around 5:30 and order their Value Slam for $4. That's normally about all we can handle, although I do look like I've been eating the Lumberjack version of the Slam, Icon_lol I usually get 20% off coupons in my email or the Sunday paper, but if not, an AARP card works almost as well.

Thanks, it's modeled after the Denny's on Bell Rd. and about 79th Ave, across from Arrowhead Mall. I like that style Denny's.

I have the KATO Denny's and while it is a Japanese restaurant it is still American styled. The only problem I have with it is a good place to put it. After seeing your parking lot I'm thinking that is the problem .It just does not look right. Nope

Yeah, all Denny's need a parking lot. The problem is that it takes up a lot of room. If I had it to do over, I would have made the structure 1:220 scale rather than 1:160. I have a couple of other structures that I scaled down like that because they overpower at the right scale. I almost didn't use it because of the space issue. But then again, what is a community without at least one Denny's? 8-)

Catt- that's an issue with so many layouts. There's never enough parking, the roads are too narrow, enough space between the railroad and the buildings, and industries that seem too small for the traffic they get. I think about it all the time. It's just a consequence of having to selectively compress in order to make our layouts interesting.

Good point Kevin. I look at what I did, and although my small section of concrete road is scaled narrower than a normal road would be, it still looks too big and takes up more room than I'd like.

Anyway, while we were talking, a few cars and on delivery truck rolled up to the restaurant.

Thank you kind sir. You are invited for one free Grand Slam breakfast, good for whenever you can stop by. Welcome

As a matter of fact, everyone is invited for a free breakfast, good only at this Denny's though, so bring your very small appetite. Icon_lol
