CNR pre-1960 MoW scheme
#1
I have this question left unanswered for years: what color was CNR MoW equipment in the pre-1960 (wet noodle) era? To be more specific, I always wondered what color snow plow (like Russell's) wre painted back then. Was it already orange? What black with red plow?

Just curious.

Hi Matt---here's some CNR MOW equipment that my good friend Doctor Wayne created for me.The snowplow is from Custom Brass, the diner is a Model Die Cast Pullman Palace dining car and the Jordan Spreader is a Walther's kit.I have also seen the CN's snowplows painted orange as well as the box-car red version. As far as black and red snowplows,I believe that was the standard colour for Canadian Pacific equipment.Hope the pictures help, good to see you back in the modelling mode and posting some great pictures.

Hello again Matt---whenever Doctor Wayne takes on a project for me,we spend some enjoyable time doing research on the item.Books and Google are often the best source of information. Here's a great book for CNR equipment---there are pages filled with pictures and data that provide invaluable information. For example, here's a couple of snowplows in the orange and experimental black colours---note the modern CN logos on both so they may not be suitable for your modelling time frame. The data with the orange plow indicates the orange scheme was applied after 1961.The black scheme may have been applied as early as 1937---gives you more options to think about.Hopefully you may be able to get a copy of this excellent book, perhaps your local library.

Thanks Ed,

Really helpful information. I'll take a lot for this book, may be of terrific help for me. Looks like I may have to repaint my Russell some day.

I asked about the orange color because I often see pictures of Russell in orange without the wet noodle.

I don't know when I'll be back at full throttle in modelling. This spring and summer are totally overloaded at work, too many real life project going on at the same time. And many activities kept me out of the hobby for quite a few weeks.

I'm actually planning a major rebuilding of Hedley-Junction, which, if accepted by club members, would make it much more prototypical. And that means scratchbuilding CNR (ex-QRL&PCo) electric steeple cab and, maybe, a RSC-24 that was pulling trains to Murray Bay back in the good ol' time.
