Trains in the Lone Ranger
#1
I always like seeing movies with train scenes in them, especially if the movie revolves around them! Last night, my sons & I saw the Lone Ranger, which is such a movie.

There are several steam train scenes and I was trying to work out which were actual steam locos and what was computer animation. I think there was a lot of the latter, especially during some of the chase scenes near the end and also (near the beginning) when a steam engine went flying across the desert with its driving wheels turning!

We also frequently saw Jupiter and Constitution. I googled Jupiter and learned that a replica of the original was made in 1979, so perhaps that one is used in several scenes -- but is the Constitution a current, functioning engine as well? My son also said that he read that a steam engine was travelling across the US promoting this movie! I'll also do some more googling as well.

The close-up scenes, where the characters were running or riding alongside the engines, etc., sure looked & sounded real, although I realize that a lot can be done with animation these days.

Thanks, Rob
Rob

I'd like to see that movie , too , as I also enjoyed the train sequences in the previews ......I see a couple of "expert critics " have panned the movie already . Maybe their free popcorn wasn't salty enough Icon_lol

I thought the movie was good overall. It's obviously far-fetched & corny, just take it for what it is. There are some weird mystical scenes in it which I wasn't too keen on, but I enjoyed the old western scenes, the humour and the train scenes. Quite a few steam engines get destroyed which I obviously winced at! And, as a railway enthusiast, there was another element in the movie that I didn't like but I won't say what it was as I don't want to give away the plot!

I haven't gone to see this yet. I have to get myself comfortable with the idea of Johnny Depp as Tonto.
That said, I remember "The Lone Ranger" as a radio show first, then TV with Clayton Moore as "ranger" and Jay Silverheels as Tonto.
"Return with us now, to those thrilling days of yesteryear....The Lone Ranger rides again! "
( cue: The William Tell Overture ) Wink Smile Smile Hi Yo Silver......away !!! Big Grin Big Grin

I did enjoy his performance as "Captain Jack Sparrow". You're right, just to see Depp as Tonto - - - -
or would that be "Captain" Tonto..... Icon_twisted 357 357

Usually, I don't like Johnny Depp movies too much -- he's too weird. However, I did like his performance in Lone Ranger.

Another great Johnny Depp movie that involves trains (briefly) that was shot in Chicago and in Wisconsin is Public Enemies. It's the story of John Dillinger and his rise and fall, but features my favorite steam locomotive the Milwaukee Road #261. It's cool that she's a movie star but unrealistic in the fact that the #261 was built in 1944 and the movie takes place in the early 1930's. Nope
