Removing lettering

Hi,

I've got a True Line CN 8 hatches reefer. These reefer were painted the wrong colour (grey instead of aluminium) and so TLT provided a second shell correctly painted. Since the shell is rather nice and prototypical, I feel it would be a good idea to repaint it correctly and build a new underframe. The grey they used is similar to the maple leaf scheme from the 50s. My idea would be to remove the lettering, kept the gray and apply new correct decals.

Have anyone of you ever tried removing lettering from a TLT car? I was thinking about using solvaset and see what can be done but would like some feedback before messing up the shell. The worst that main happen is a complete repaint...

I removed the lettering from a Trueline CPR caboose, using a rag dampened with methyl hydrate. The lettering wiped right off...along with most of the paint.

I've always used brake fluid.

"Joe's Model Trains" , paint and decal remover. So far I have not had any problems with this product. I have used it to remove the lettering from several old Athearn cars, with no major damage to the paint surface under the letters.
Like all things, there is a "learning curve"......I would recommend using it on a car that you intend to repaint before re-lettering, just to learn how best to use it.

I'll try removing the car number on the ends of the reefer and see. I'll let you know if it works.

Anyway, the grey color looks wrong for CN grey 11, I'll probably repaint the entire car.
