Fish is an old term for joining. In old naval novels, they talk about "fishing" a spar that has broken to make a temporary repair, probably with a splint and a lot of lashing.

OT: just as "frog" is a term for something on the bottom of a horses hoof; look at a diagram and compare to a switch frog.
