Recently I replaced the wheels on my older Athearn BB diesels with nickle silver wheels in an attempt to eliminate wheel sparking.
After I replaced the wheels I hit them with a small shot of powdered graphite. As I began to running the diesels with the new wheel sets I noticed
that they were a little bit louder than before.
Should I have used a different lubricant?

I have never lubed the wheels, only the gears

The graphite may cause a grinding sound in the gears and/or it is not lubricating them so you are getting gear chatter. I use a light grease -- I think it is a white lithium, but I am not sure. The tube is at the club at the moment. I would suggest disassembling the trucks and cleaning out he graphite before adding grease.

Bob, keep in mind that graphite is a conductor...

Charlie not exactly sure what that means but I went to LHS and bought a tube a lubricating grease. Cleaned gear box best I could, put some grease on gears and let it run
and as per directions put on a little more. Then ran it on tracks. What a difference.
