I tried the first time a light gray wash on the dark gray wall to look faded. It worked quite well. The lighter walls and the change of the ground from asphalt to concrete made it more friendly.
I have been convinced to stay with the pellet loading facility from Walthers. It looks right in the context with the cars and buildings.

I started a cost savings project by collecting, cleaning, soldering together and silver spraying a bunch of old pieces of security fence and reused them for a fairly long fence in front of the plastic plant. Only the barb wire on top could not be saved and is a loss.

This is the base I reused Micron Art 93405 https://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/462-93405

ps. I weathered the silos yesterday all evening with several layers of a black wash and they still look perfect white on the photo... Sad

Cornerstone's modern un/loading platform is not required for my plastic hopper unloading but it might be useful as an inspection platform (no piping) in case somethings needs attention on top of the hoppers.

A truck parking lot is used to store containers now. Adds some color to the layout.

Populated the roofs and added a bill board (left over from the Chicago theme). Just one detail per day.

ps. The billboard looks huge on he photo (wide angle?) but fits nice on the real layout.

Yes, I found it two hours ago and I am deeply impressed. It is much better than anything I did with run down buildings in the past (Peter Feigenbaums photos are still my harddisk!).
There are buildings on the layout that might become victims.....

Got two bulk trailers from Shapeways this morning. They are quite ok but the surface is to rough to use them as stainless steel trailers. Light gray is ok foe my eyes. I would be glad if the transition from tire to rim would be more precise to make it easier to paint a round black tire.

All those of you with good eyes and the patience to do perfect surfaces would be disappointed to use it e.g. as locomotive shell or cab etc. Anyhow there are some differences because the caboose roofs I got last week had a smoother surface. This all new technology and full of surprises.

I remember a discussion here at Big Blue about (grain) bulk trailers some years ago. There was one company in the US that had built them. One of the forum members had a contact to the owner and got the answer that the bulk trailer have been discontinued and no further production is planned. That bulk trailer was of good quality but the price was high too (+ shipping + tax for me). The virtually hopeless situation made me try the Shapeways product but your conclusion is absolutely true and valid.

This one seems like it was able to get an aluminum looking finish on it

Right, the plain shape of the body permit filling and sanding without ruining the details. The typical plastic pellet trailer has the more complex shape and the cyclone (pump) at the end. That is the reason why I selected this one well knowing that I will have little chance for sanding.

They are a resin kit from a gentleman from Canada, you also need to purchase an Athearn 40' container chassis for the frame. With shipping from Canada they are somewhat pricey but make a nice model of a bulk pneumatic trailer.
If you need more info go to http://www.1-87vehicles.org then go to new products for January 2010.

That was except the cyclone the most close in good quality I could find.

I got a long time ago this Trainman CP GP38-2 from ebay. It was awfully over weathered and I cleaned it up and used it some times.
It was time to use the day to add some details and make the more simple modifications to make the Atlas standard GP38-2 shell a little bit more CP specific. The new front light in the low hood will get it's LED tomorrow.

Less is more. Two smaller buildings found their way under the layout.

And a clean horizontal cut at the west end.

Last but not least was the old brick building replaced by a modern shoebox and it looked not good at all. I removed the brand new building and sticked some trees in the footprint. I like it, that fits the scenery much better.

You did a good job chopping down that Walthers furniture warehouse down to 1 story.
