Some Oldies...
#1
I posted these at the request of a buddy at the "other" place, and thought I would share with you all as well...
These are a few of the oldies that were first purchased by my ol' man waayyy back in 1950-51 +/-, and were the first "consist" we had until the early 60's when we started a layout. All of these are Athearn metal kits, with the exception of the hopper, which is a Varney plastic kit, and the caboose, which is wood. Most of these have undergone some minor restoration, as time & travel have taken their toll, but all are operational on my LC&P. As can be seen, all have been converted to KD couplers.

First up, a WP 40' silver box car.

Next, a Northern Pacific "classic" orange reefer...

A CYTX tanker follows...(Note it still has the original trucks with oversized flanges, as does the caboose...)

A Seaboard 50' boxcar (I have recently acquired another one of these with a different #..!!)

The Varney NYC hopper...

And bringing up the rear, Ol' Faithful. I had at one time considered lettering it for the LC&P, but thought it should be left as my Ol' Man left it....

There's also a flat car in the collection, as well as a 0-4-0 and 4-6-2, all from the same time period. Unfortunately, they've fallen victim to Zamac "disease"...and are slowly desintegrating....

Well, that about wraps it up...!!

Nice sharing a bit of history with you all..... Icon_lol

Nice, I would love to build one of those old Athearn metal kits, if I ever find one. English Model Supply (Bowser) owns the tooling, but they have not offered the kits in years, and probably won't any time soon.

I have built several of the Bowser/English kits...but they don't count as genuine oldies.
I've also picked up a few of the original Athearn kits on eBay....I have a couple yet to build..one of these days... Goldth

BTW...The caboose is a Silver Streak kit...not Athearn... Nope

Being a "genuine oldie" isn't really an issue for me. I would just like to build one of the brass kits for fun.I don't do Ebay, and so far I haven't seen any of the old metal kits at any of the swap meets or train shows I've gone to.

In my book, that makes it much better. I've had both old Athearn and old Silver Streak...and I'll take the Silver Streak any day. Those are still nice models today in my book.

My primary goal is a large Oahu Railway layout in On3
My secondary interests are modeling the Denver, South Park, & Pacific in On3 and NKP in HO

Thanks for sharing the history! It's a nice looking set of rolling stock.

I picked up an Athearn metal round roof N&W box car at a show...can't recall if it's 50' or 40'. Anyway, the roofwalk had been attacked by the metal crud and was too brittle to use. I may commit some horrible anachronistic heresy and find some nice new etched Plano roofwalks to replace it, someday. :o

For now it rests in the pile of forlorn kits, glad to be purchased and in some compassionate modeler's home, but waiting to be assembled and get out on the high iron.

I may not be a rivet counter, but I sure do like rivets!
