Amanda Thanks!

I will be posting another update or two shortly. Tonight was a big milestone. The two track main line is finally tacked down and wired into 4 power districts/blocks. I have been running test trains for the last hour or so.

I weathered the walls hoping to make the mortar lines to stand out more. I painted them with Folk Art Morning Mist and then wiped the paint off. I painted the details and window sills with Folk Art Linen. The mortar line do stand out but overall I feel the walls are too dark.

To make the walls lighter I used several layers of Pan Pastels Titanium White spraying with Dullcoat after each application. I like this look better. Next step is installing 262 window frames.

Tom when you are painting the walls are you using a hand brush or an airbrush? Could you talk through your process a little, please?

Much obliged.

Amanda

For this project I am doing hand brushing.

The method I used is as follows:

1. Spray the walls with Dullcoat.
2. Hand brush the wall in small sections. I went heavy with the coat.
3. I used a paper towel to wipe off the paint. This fills in the mortar lines but also colors the bricks.
4. I hand brushed the details and window sills with two coats.
5. Seal the paint with Dullcoat.
6. Since I felt the bricks were too dark. I then used weathering chalks from called Pan Pastels. I did two applications. After each application I sealed them with Dullcoat.

Unfortunately I did not take any photos of each step this time. Next project I will take more photos.

Hope this helps. Any questions please feel free to ask.

Did you thin the paint at all? I am still having a hard time working out how to thin my paints for handbrushing and have been using the same paint brands as you.

No I did not thin the paint. They were a good consistency when I opened them. They were newer bottles, aka bought within the last year and this was the first time they were open.

I sympathize with you on the thinning. I am having a devil of time thinning the craft paints for airbrushing. Before my 10 year hiatus from the hobby I was able to thin them just right. Now it I can hardly get them anywhere near right. I just bought a bunch of airbrush ready paint but I have not tried any yet.

One thing I have found that helps with the hand brushing is multiple thin layers and paint in the same direction every layer. Depending on how the layers go on you may have to seal in between layers.
