Well It's been a while and I am not keeping this thread updated.
What's new is my friend large layout which is now 100% fully CTC (Centralised Traffic Control) That means the layout is fully signalled and include 2 RTC (Railway Traffic Controller). 
I participated in a mini ops session on this famous layout: The Wolverine Lynx Railroad - people come from far and wide to see and operate on this layout. Anyway, this is a large layout built for operations. It is roughly 36 X 40 feet and it is equipped with fully functioning signal.
These signals replicate the various aspect that CP rail uses. They also replicate CP construction and various types (mast, bridge, cantilever, dwarf etc.).
One RTC is in charge of the "East" the other is in charge of the "West". They control all freight and passenger trains movements via computer. All instruction are given/received via radio. JMRI is used for freight manifest and switching
It would be safe to say that this layout replicates real-life operations to an extent rarely seen on the majority of layouts. Mini Ops session video part 1 :
