I'm not familiar with the MRC unit, but if it is wired to work with a DC input, plugging AC into it will probably let the smoke out. 2.5 amps is quite suitable for a small-medium sized layout with capacity to run at least 3 locos at the same time (or "motors"...) If that's not enough in your case, I would look for a higher rated DC unit.
