I got just one book for my birthday last week, and it arrived today:

Amtrak Equipment Plan and Data Manual (NRPC CMO-117) (1976 with some 1977)-

Its basically a diagram of every single last piece of locomotive hauled passenger car type on amtrak (no Metroliners or self propelled cars). It gives one side of the car (though sadly not the reverse side), the underbody details, the interior, and other technical details. low quality black and white photos of the exterior and interior are available for each car as well.

If a passenger car is even slightly different, it gets its own page. So far, the only car that seems to be missing is the Kitchen/Dormitory cars on the Twin Unit PRR Diners. There may be others, but given that the book contains just over 700 differen passenger car diagrams, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume most of them are covered.

Modeling early Amtrak just got easier!
