In the 30's-40's and 50's our local steel mill could not find enough workers. They hired many from the south but had trouble finding homes for so many. On a corner of the property they lined up old box cars and painted them gray. They were free to use but they had to be converted for living by the workers. Many families grew in silver city. Our local paper just did an article last year on this but I can't find it on line right now.
