Geez, Reinhard! Confusedhock:

I turn my attention to other threads for a few hours and ...

... Where the Hell am I? I'm pretty sure there was a factory here! :?
I am in the process of restructuring the right hand corner. It should match the modern and open style the middle part has been changed to during the last weeks. This is the current view as I see it from my default seat.

The birds view shows a new street has been added at the right end of the layout. The street is a defined end and very useful in front of the glass door where a backdrop is not suitable. The three tracks are more structured. One serves the new industry under construction at the wall, the middle serving some more (off the layout) industries and crosses the street and the front serves the triangle area.
I am uncertain how to proceed with the triangle area. Options under investigation are
1. No more buildings. Just an open space used as a parking lot and may be used as a team track.
2. KFC restaurant with a nice and clean parking lot http://www.rd-hobby.de/shopping/catalog....&item=3448
3. substandard diner with a rotten parking lot http://www.rd-hobby.de/shopping/catalog....item=18469
Option 1,2 and 3 assume a former industry in the triangle was the purpose of the track. The track is no longer in use or only a storage track wit a lot of growing grass etc.
4. small rectangular industry at the track, free space used for trucks serving the industry
5. larger building with triangle shape fitting excatly in the spot
All options must support the removable section in front of the glass door. You see the break of the sections in the triangle area. Your opinion is very welcome.

ps. The SP switcher has been added to make P5se Camelback feel more home on a north eastern named layout... Big Grin

I chose Option #3, Der Cornerstone Bausatz Miss Bettie's Diner and a "not so clean" parking lot, with a garbage dumpster inside a tall paint-peeling wooden fence that has a double gate for the garbage/dumpster-dumper truck to have access. The two gate doors should be partially open, with extra trash and garbage on the ground inside the enclosure (as there always is.) But don't put too many cars in the parking lot ... lack of patrons due to a declining neighborhood is obviously reason the diner has become "sub-standard." I'm assuming this new, "sub-standard" diner would front on the new street and the rear of the diner with the dumpster in its enclosure in the parking lot, would face "in" for us to enjoy the view ... maybe a couple of cars with a few teenagers "hanging out" would be appropriate. I really do like the new developments! Thumbsup Big Grin

But now ... Reinhard ... really ...!
"ps. The SP switcher has been added to make P5se Camelback feel more home on a north eastern named layout... "
I must say I truely appreciate the gesture of adding an Espee SW1500 (or whatever - I don't really know my modern-day diesels all that well ... MP1500?) ... but SP, Southern Pacific ... I haven't seen one of them since I lived out in Redondo Beach, near Los Angeles, California. (And now that I live way down the southwest coast of Florida I hardly ever see any kind of train!) Sad

That said, who knows ... with all the railroad mergers going on, if I still lived in the Philadelphia area, I might even see an Espee locomotive! Stranger things have happened! Big Grin 357 Icon_lol

But, Reinhard ... I really DO appreciate the thought! Worship

The diner is on order but I do need some background on garbage handling in the US. A family has a garbage can or black plastic bag or more it fills up and puts it in front of the house at a given date and time to be picked up. A restaurant (like the diner in this case) has a larger container behind the restaurant. That container will be picked up on a regular schedule. In many cases is the container hidden/surrounded by some kind of (wooden) fence. There is a lot of garbage beside the container within the fence because the restaurant people don't care or because the container is to small.
Is that correct?
What does the garbage collector do? Pick up the container to empty it only or do they also manually pickup all the stuff within the fenced area?
Do you have different kind of garbage for recycling? e.g. glass, plastic. metal etc?

I will scan some cities with birds view to find some of this "nice" facilities... Thanks for the suggestion!

That's what I see in Houston.

I don't work at a restaurant, but we do have a dumpster... the contract says they only take stuff in the dumpster. So anything thrown on the outside won't be picked up. I imagine it is the same way for a restaurant. Basically the driver pulls up to the dumpster, lifts it up and over so it dumps into the truck, then sets it back down. Driver doesn't even get out of the truck.

There is a little bit of that here and there, but for the most part, we are guilty of just throwing everything out. It is a definite shame. Metals and glass and plastic are still cheap - easier to buy new than to recycle. I figure one of these years, we will be mining the garbage dumps for all the recylable materials.
The whole dumpster garbage pick-up happens much like this.
Thank you, that answers all question except one: Why is the only kind of garbage dumpster in 1:87 scale not on stock at Walthers... Murphy is also in the garbage business Nope I will see what I can do.
Work on the right hand rear area with a simple building went well and is close to completion. The rear part of the triangle area became an old mostly unused team track with a simple concrete ramp. The entire right sections looks much more open than before. Next project is the diner with dumpster in the front area of the triangle.

In December 2009 Whis from the Netherlands had a niche layout named LA 18.th St in this section. He showed a scratch build billboard. I used his pictures as a guide and made my own.

ps. Whis, where are you? I miss you and further process on the 18.th Street!
As usual, Reinhard ... absolutely impressive! I always save your posts for until I can spend some time studying the photographs. The time is always well spent! Big Grin

Kudos for a job well done ... again! Thumbsup
The billboard is very cool! A little too modern looking or my 60's/70's layout but it looks real for today's world. Eye catching ad....if not a little disconcerting. Makes me want to brush my teeth..or even better, buy Crest strips! Goldth Seriously, very nice work!

I think a 1/87th scale dumpster would be one of the easiest things to scratch build. It is just a rectangular box about 4 feet by 8 feet about 5 feet six inches tall in the back and 4 feet 6-5 feet tall in the front. It has a couple of sheep metal lids with hinges along the back wall. Four swivel casters @ 6 inches in diameter at the corners, and 2 square tubing rails on either side @ 4x6 inches that the garbage truck's forks slide into.

I do my very best. Three Seattle 8 cubic yard containers http://www.cityofseattle.net/UTIL/Servic.../index.htm are under construction. I like the name "Cathedral-type". A garbage cathedral is something very special...

Great looking layout...

Those last photos look kind of dumpy though Icon_lol

Great job on getting these little details put together!!!
Wow, didn't take you long to get your dumpsters built. And most likely you had them done before Walthers could have shipped them to you anyway. They look GREAT!
I have a feeling that Reinhard was not referring to the Dumpsters, but the truck with which to empty the Dumpsters, which are out of stock at Walthers (I looked ... I've even considered giving a shot at bashing up a COE Waste Management truck for him ... a front loader - they only have one conventional cab rear-loader at Walthers!) We'll see ... 8-)
