Looks like there's room for a KFC in that back corner, maybe facing the other way to suggest street access is from beyond the backdrop.
I like the truck loading terminal at the State St. of the prototype. For my layout it moved from the west to the east side of the main building.

No chance for a KFC as long as there is no prototype KCF in Vernon or the immediate neighborhood. It is my goal for this layout update to have scratch build structure inspired by prototypes in and around Vernon only.
The lot left to this one will be used for a model of the prototype structure at the same block east side at Alcoa Ave.
The front of the left most industry (50th St / Alcoa Ave) is under construction since some hours. Did run out of windows, have to put some dummies in the window row.

The left most building waits for details to be done tomorrow. It is now time for glue and paint to set.

This little overview of the east industry should provide an impression of the proportions of switcher, switching cut, track length and building size. That is the reason why I removed a switch and a track. The buildings needs to be more dominating (depth about 7") and the track needs to be longer to hold the switcher more easy without fouling the road.

Reinhard, roads get fouled all the time![attachment=11783]I don't worry about it, it's part of the fun![attachment=11782]

Oh yes, sure and I have to do so frequently. I do just want to drop and pickup one or two cars "off road". I guess I am a helpless fan of Pelle and Lance design basics ....

Do you have any idea what industry can be put on the small triangle lot adjacent to the new building between the tracks and the road?
It should be rail served with black tank cars and/or covered hoppers from the front track and have "some" similarities with a Vernon (or at least SoCa) prototype. I can not find anything in that ballpark. Last resort would be a parking lot.... none rail served Wink

Here is a team track in Fontana, which although 40 miles away or so, is spiritually very, very close to Vernon. You can see tank cars spotted here -- I think most are ethanol, being used to mix in smaller quantities with local distributors. I've also seen sulfuric acid cars here. You can also see a coil car.[attachment=11789]To unload the tank cars, a tank truck pulls alongside and pumps the stuff out. To unload anything else, they use a heavy duty forklift:[attachment=11785]Railboxes are very common there, and you can also see bulkhead flats loaded with rebar. The great thing is all you need for an "industry" is hard-packed dirt or broken asphalt a la the Busch sheet, you can display various trucks in the scene and swap them out frequently, and it can all be temporary but still a way to get a lot of operating variety.
That sounds very good! Is it the Fontana BNSF Logistic Center at Santa Ana Ave?

It's on the UP south of the Sunset Route, at about the 10500 block of Live Oak Avenue.

Found it. A great facility. Made of absolute nothing will it perfect fit into that small space. Approaching from south with street view is the forklift at work unloading center beams.
Reinhard - it isn't Vernon, but this little place might solve the problem http://groups.yahoo.com/group/small-lay ... sage/23996
and http://forum.mtimag.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1396 - two threads about the same place Falmouth, Kentucky

Here are a couple other ideas, for your yard area. A container with a traffic cone at the BNSF Kaiser yard, for storing whatever:[attachment=11804]And a remote control locomotives sign from BNSF Kaiser:[attachment=11803]
It is a good idea to check if your brick wall is made of styrene or printed cardboard when you spray soft water freely over track, new ground cover and wall of the building Wallbang
Let's wait until it is dry to assess the damage...

Thank you again for the details. The sign is great. I will use it on my layout. I thought the yard at E 25th St might have some details I could copy. I could not do photos due to the sun standing low over the yard.

I've been myself a little bit disappointed with paper glued on styrene. If there's a little bit of moisture, everything start to bulge... BTW, it's still a interesting building made up in just a few hours.

I think I posted a shot of the yard office at E 25th St/J Yard earlier in this thread. Here's the yard office at Kaiser on the BNSF:[attachment=11805]I think your yard in the foreground might be a little small for one of the LAJ yards, but it could stand in a little better for either the UP or BNSF yards at their respective Kaiser locations, or the BNSF Malabar yard, or the UP 4th St or J Yards.
