It would be great if UPY would have a larger fleet of them and a nice model would be available. I would run some of that modern short switchers on my layout (4 * would = pure phantasy Sad ). I did never see a scratch built or kit bashed model of it.
The buildings made after SoCal prototypes are back on the layout. Only the little odd shaped brick building, the universal garage like building, the walls and the mill after a Cleveland prototype survived. They blend nicely with the concrete slab buildings (shoeboxes Wink )
It is my intention to stay with my freelance layout in SoCal. If I do a rebuild in 2013 a more prototype track plan has highest priority. That requires a more or less a rebuild from scratch. I am not ready to do that at this time.

However, I did overstretch two fingers at the right hand some weeks ago and had some severe pain yesterday when I did the very little rework. I am afraid I was to optimistic assuming it will heal by itself and may need to see the doctor tomorrow to be back in the layout building business soon.

The Atherrn Genesis UPY GP15-1 run in SoCal (ex MP units) became available yesterday at M.B.Klein. I have to wait 3-5 weeks to have them here on my layout. Trainworld, shipping within 48 hours via DHL express, was already sold out.... I hate waiting weeks for parcels to arrive on the other side of the pond.

Four working days left and another 6 month "inactive" turn will start 357

I kept the little odd shaped brick building and the wall because they fit so well

Next two areas are back to SoCal as it has been before

The garage like building is so universal it survived the transition back to SoCal and replaces the former UP J yard building.

I like the loooooong building in the background now optically separated by the looooong brick wall
[Image: file_zpsbe2b11bc.jpg]

The plain brick structure build after a prototype in Cleveland survived too. I like the low-key structure and it fits nice into the corner.

Nice layout. Thumbsup
Do you have a track plan to share?

This old pencil drawing is the best I can offer..... shame on me (the east industry is two tracks only, I did remove one more switch)

A new idea for a yard office. I'm really starting to get interested in the Los Angeles port area; this is Mead Yard, the Valero refinery is in the background.

The RH building bears a passing resemblance to this kit from PECO

I suspect they are very much like these http://www.actonmobile.com/trailers/industrial.aspx a niche that a model manufacturer could fill with inexpensive laser-cut card, it seems to me. Trouble is, everyone wants to do a never-never George Sellios style kit, when there's all kinds of stuff worth modeling in the real world!
I think the closest you will find is something like this http://www.eurorailhobbies.com/erh_deta ... ock=K38627 One of the European manufacturers did a "Temporary police station" which was close, but I can't find the link

EDIT = I found it http://www.eurorailhobbies.com/erh_deta ... ck=BU-1058
another alternative - Busch 1032/1033/1034 http://www.gaugemaster.com/search_resul ... category#3
Finally I get to comment this thread, I love your work and I have been following this for a while!

Greetings from Sweden! Cheers

Some shots of the Malabar switch job in Vernon. The job pushes steel coil cars out of the yard to the east and then crosses Pacific Avenue. Keep those crossing lights, Reinhard!

A couple of gensets crossing the Long Beach Freeway (the lane was clear ahead of me, I had the camera on the seat next to me and grabbed the shot real quick!)

Welcome to Aspirin 357 from Sweden and thanks for the friendly words.

John, I get sentimental when I see that yard. It was to very well accessible when we have been in Vernon and it has the old wig wag still in operation. I will keep the crossing lights for sure. They had been temporary stored when the layout moved to Chicago.
Did you shot the BNSF Genset II intentionally for me? Atlas announced those Genset with dynamic breaks and a reservation has been done. Availability date is between summer and xmas this year... depends whom you ask Sad

Here's a better shot of 1293:

As far as I can see, BNSF genset I's are used in Texas and Northern California, though a few shots show one or two in San Bernardino.

We went to where that switch job took those coil cars.

You inspired me to give it a try and do my very first video. It is a sweep over the layout part with scenery (south) from the right (west) to the left (east).

This is the result from my iPhone4, iMovie without any changed and upload via Youtube web interface. The filetype is m4v and it's size is 37.8MB on my hard disk. I would be glad to get some basic feedback if you can view it at all etc. because I did use Apple equipment only.
I made a second version of the same video following Youtube's recommendations. It became a Quicktime video (.mov) with a size of 77.5MB. I will upload that huge file only if you can not view the current smaller video.

ps. The video is not focused very well but it demonstrated very well about how I see my layout when operating it with no reading classes.
Reinhard - that is nice - very nice indeed. I wish I had that sort of room available
Best
Jack
