SSWUPinSA Wrote:Thanks Rscott417, I think I misunderstood you, thought you were saying one needs more room....my bad. Silly how tight things look but there is always a prototype somewhere that proves a though.

As long as there's room to maneuver and clearance to get by then you're good and if there isn't enough room you have two options move the car or clear a path.
Looking at the prototypes found and out of all the ones I have been looking at and adjusted the plan a little to suit. the Area would be based loosely in Anaheim in 1995-2000 but still freelance.
I want to steer away form complicating and crowding the layout, need space. Dropped the road crossing and will model the "street running" in Olive St Anaheim on the staging cassette.

Thanks for the revision ED(FCIN)... I quite like it. Comments guys?

The prototypes are:
1. MPP (Manufactured Packaging Products) - Cardboard manufacturer getting boxcars of paper/card rolls and the odd hopper of corn starch for adhesive.
[attachment=25729]

2. SB Thomas Bakery (Bimbos) - Spot for a hopper(flour or sugar) and one for oil when needed.

3. Ganahl Lumber Company (Crenshaw - forgot to re-label)

I would like to model a few of their lumber "shelters", would make a cool facility that looks busy.

Note the ramp at the end of the rail for unloading plain flats or more than likely a truck?
With roof details like so

So been looking at the industries and wondering if you guys have any advice on how to keep the industries looking separate but at the a=same time not ending up with large areas on backdrop with nothing against them? I guess the norm is bushes, trees, containers and buildings but at what point do I make it look too crowded and end up with the industries being too close and looking like one big industry?

I found these references that will be used at SB Thomas:

And perhaps something mobile and small like this at the tank spot:

Those are great detail pics. What are you going to make the hoses out of?
I picked up a bag of various sizes of both brass and aluminum tubing at a train show . There are also tube benders available for small diameter tubing .....just a thought .
I'm still some time away from building these details but on first thoughts the easiest way would be to use some solid ore brass wire with black insulated outer or similar, it's already a plastic/rubber looking line and it can be bent to shapes that represent hose.
Try fine heat-shrink tubing with either solder or copper wire threaded through it - that's what I use - comes in assorted sizes from Ebay

That's a better bet....very clever!!
There used to be a product called Bend-A-Rod. Car modelers used it to make roll cages and exhaust systems. It was solid plastic rods in various diameters that had memory so when you bent it it stayed in that shape. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm must remind myself to do a search for that.
Went out with a girl like that once , Mike , ..........named Brenda but she had a nickname . Icon_lol
Eek Crazy Nope Icon_lol
Just some minor adjustments, I know everyone has their opinion of Industries on the front of the layout but I like it, they mostly non rails served and the one on the far left front hides the end of the layout and provides protection for the locomotive when it's close to the edge of the layout.

Can anyone tell me what a prototypical (or what appears to look prototypical) distance between a spur and a fence/boundary wall and between the spur and a building that the train passes. In other words clearance in a concrete canyon as well as next to industries?

Also what is the recommendation for clearance between the cars spotted on a spur and the passing cars on the main or runaround?
