The Hobo Camp Fire Is going well #X.. Stop In!!!
Greetings, gang.

75 under cloudy skies with an allotted temperature near 80. We have apparently gone over our allotment for temperature as tonight's low will be in the low 40s and the high for tomorrow is only in the low 60s.

Busy weekend so far. Friday I went to Ames for some shopping and then a football game Friday evening in Gowrie. Very exciting games and the kids almost knocked off an undefeated team. Lots of fun. Saturday was a cross country meet in the morning and Nebraska football in the afternoon. This morning I watched a rather routine F1 race. After that I cleaned up the grave sites for my wife and son.

Tomorrow I need to see about the tires for my car that I didn't get last week. Seems my tire dealer was moving to a new location and not yet open for business. Not much else on the agenda until Tuesday afternoon when one of the great-grandkids has a football game.

Gas was down to $2.67 when I was about and about this morning.

All stay safe.

A little story about my father.
After the war, he took teacher training. He found that if he took a phys ed option, he could get a shower a couple of times a week. (There were shortages at the time!)
At his first job, he was given the training of the junior football team. He ran them through the basic drills and such, but there were no other junior teams in the county to play. At the end of the year they played the senior team and beat them.
When he moved to the big city a dozen years later, he put a throwaway line in his qualifications "coached an undefeated football team". (Dad was very precise). When he retired, the local paper put in big type "Coached a championship football team".

In model railroading, there are between six and two hundred ways of performing a given task.
Most modellers can get two of them to work.

David, Thanks for sharing that story. I got a great smile from it.

Nice story, David. My dad's legal first name was Glen but unbeknown to all of us he always added a second "n" to the end because he thought it was cool. We never knew until he confessed shortly before he died.

Greetings, gang.

45 and clear this morning with a guessed at high in the upper 60s.

Yesterday was fairly routine. Did some shopping in the morning but only found about half of what I was looking for. Then after lunch I made arrangements to get the new tires Wednesday afternoon. That will be a little pricey. While at the grocery store I decided on impulse to see if there was instant tea on the shelf, knowing that Lipton had discontinued it some time ago. Surprise! It's back! Not nearly as good a flavor as Nestea but the convenience is great. Time to stock up on it.

Not much on the agenda for today until late afternoon when there's a football game for one of the great-grandsons.

Gas continues to drop. As of yesterday afternoon it was $2.63.

All stay safe.

Greetings, gang.

Clear and cool again this morning at 41 degrees. Near 70 later on with only light breezes.

Went back to the gym yesterday for the first time in almost 2 months. Some parts went well, others not so much. Football game in the afternoon was fun to watch. Only major activity on the agenda for today is to spend a lot of money for new tires. May ride the bike for a while afterwards.

Gas took its usual midweek jump. Up 26 cents to $2.89. Still better than the 40 cents jumps it has taken in the past.

All stay safe.

Morning, all.

Got back late last night from a 2 week family visit & travel on the East Coast.
Learned a lot more about US history when visiting Boston, Portsmouth, and Portland ME.
Saddened to learn heartbreaking details of slaveholding in colonial Boston.

Decommissioned Navy Yard in Boston has some great examples of dockside cranes.
An apparent track gauge of 20 feet.  Super broad gauge?
I never knew the crane tracks could curve, and that switches let them shift to other wharves.  Great example if you are interested in RR port activities.

Learned that one of my favorite industries -- supplying shipments to my model RR-- no longer operates in Portland ME.
B&M Oven Baked Beans relocated their mfg to somewhere in the midwest.  The building still stands, is being incorporated into a university building under construction.

And on a happy note, contractors just finished up a repair to the house.  They did a good job, and there were no unpleasant surprises.

Have a great day, and enjoy your trains!

Sun but only a hi in the 60s, maybe. House was chilly, turned the furnace on (70) don't care what month it is, I go by the temp.
Had a doc appointment this morning, gas was $3.09 most places.
No special news just checking in. Some grocery shopping on the to-do list, not sure when.

I haven't been into work since last Wednesday when we had an "orderly shutdown" after Congress couldn't do their collective jobs. Since I'm a supervisor, orderly was 4 more hours after the rest of my staff left. I was hoping something might happen early this week down there, but it appears bleak. Grinds my gears, but there's not much I can do about the situation.

Played our annual 36-hole grudge match against our rival golf team from our league last Friday and our team emerged victorious which is a change from the last 4 years of doing it. Course we played is soon to go under the bulldozers and become more housing.

The dog's been the benefactor of my time at home - we've been hiking almost every day including today which was a bit rainy at the start.

Extra time at home has also meant that I'm spending more time here in my office with the railroad with a focus on finishing White Haven. You'll probably continue to see posts on my progress there.

Forecast is for cooler weather coming - it's been an Indian Summer kind of climate for the past two weeks.

Greetings, gang.

Partly cloudy and dark in the remote reaches of northern Iowa this morning. 56 now headed for the low to mid 70s later on.

Went to Waterloo yesterday for an informal class reunion. Fun catching up with people I never knew back then. After that I did some shopping and came home. Not much planned for today other than a trip to the gym this morning.

Gas already starting to drop again. $2.89 Yesterday morning when I left town. When I got back early yesterday afternoon it was already down to $2.85.

All stay safe.

Greetings, gang.

46 under mostly cloudy skies this morning. The NWS has indicated that they will be removing some of the clouds later on and allow us about 25 degrees to be released throughout the day along with some wind (probably to remove some of the clouds) near 25 mph.

Yesterday I took apart the outdoor bench and gave the wood portions the first coat of varnish. Today I'll do the second coat and the I'll store the disassemble pieces until next spring. Not much planned for today other than the usual Saturday projects.

Gas continues to drop. Down to $2.83 yesterday.

All stay safe.

Saturday 10/11/25
Hello Blue
Sun 60s for the day. Nights are getting chilly, furnace is set at 70.
Saturday cartoons are over, laundry is done, breakfast has been served. Well, the Redwings and the Tigers lost last night. Hopefully the Buckeyes will break that trend today. Got nothing else on the menu for this day. Leaves are falling, grass looks scrubby but not long enough to cut.

Greetings, gang.

50 headed for the upper 60s. Rain chances tonight through Friday night range from 20% to 50%.

Quiet day yesterday but Saturday was somewhat event filled. Got most of the laundry done and washed a load of rags. Seems the washer didn't like that and went on strike. The professional strike buster (aka the repairman) will be called this morning. Also need to call the car dealer to set up and appointment for the 100,000 mile check up on my car. Then depending on when the repairman can get her I need to haul away some yard waste and maybe get in a trip to the gym.

Gas took a big drop yesterday from $2.83 yesterday to $2.71 this morning.

All stay safe.

Good evening folks

It has been some time since I posted in detail. The wife and I went on our first European vacation. We went on cruise from Rome to the Greek Islands of Santorini and Mykonos. We visited the ruins of Ephesus in Turkey. We stopped in Naples and saw Pompeii and Herculaneum. We spent two days before and after the cruise in Rome. We saw the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Forum, and the Colosseum. We enjoyed ourselves.

However, not long after we got home, we both came down with a really nasty cold. Prior to leaving we both got our flu and covid shots. We left for vacation on September 17 and returned October 1 and basically have been sick for the past two weeks. We are guessing we caught something on the plane.

Tonight is the first time I have actually felt like sitting down and writing some kind of a post.

To make things even better in the middle of doing our vacation laundry our dyer died. The new one will arrive on Friday. In the meantime, I need to straighten up the base as I have model train stuff everywhere. I need to get things put away and, in some cases, moved out of the way. I have run some trains in the last couple of days.

I hope everybody has a good evening.
