If that second house were mine, I'd extend the porch the full width of that wing of the house, then put a shed-type roof over it, supported by at least four posts and enclosed by a railing supported by balusters (spindles). It should be at least four feet deep, but preferably more, to be of any practical use as a "sittin'-type" porch. Misngth

The original porch works because it allows access to the door, with room to step out of the path of the door's swing as it opens. It's primarily an entry porch, and not intended for sittin', except for, occasionally, the steps.
