you can make shades by center drilling the material of choice and punch out a disk make a die(drill a small depression in a block of hard wood) a wood dowel rounded on the end pushed down on disk and walla a shade. and yes LED are dimmable but not to the amount of a incondencent bulb, however they do come in a great varity of
brightness.
