As for the MDC boxcab - the only one I have ever tried to run was old, slow, and noisy. I think something was wrong with it, but I never got the time to tinker with it. I am not sure if MDC changed the mechanism over the years, but I do remember the thing looking pretty cool. If you can't find one at a reasonable price, perhaps you could kitbash one of your own using a small switcher chassis and a body made from caboose shells.
