If you work at it long enough, you'll be able to anticipate "the look" well in advance of receiving it. In fact, you will know that it's coming the moment which you form the mere thought to, at some point in the near or distant future, do or say that which garners "the look". However, preventative development beyond that seems to be impossible and you will be doomed to experience "the look" "for so long as ye both shall live".
I've been at this so long, I get "the look" from women I don't even know - I'm never homesick.
