Ed,

3578's CN heritage is not that evident anymore as SRNJ recently repainted her

Bruce and Randy---I believe the Providence and Worchester also had the M420W's on it's roster---I'm not sure whether they were bought new or second hand from the Canadian National---any ideas :?: :?: :?:

If I recall correctly, the P&W bought theirs new, and the re-paint of 3578 is representative of the paint scheme used at that time. On the other hand, there's not a heckuva lot I still do recall correctly. Misngth Misngth

Through the power of Google I was able to find information indicating that the Providence and Worchester purchased their M420's new from the Montreal Locomotive Works.Designated M420R,the first of 5 locomotives #2001 was delivered 2/74---where they ended up is still a mystery to me

The Southern RR of NJ has three M420R's that were orginally built for the Providence and Worcester RR which were sold to the Iowa Interstate, then to the SRNJ. The other four were orginally built for the CN.
3578 was built for the CN, later sold to the St Lawerence and Atlantic and then the SRNJ.

Thanks Bruce (again, some excellent photos)---it appears the only difference is the trucks---I read that the trucks from the M420R units were taken from RS-3's

Now I'm really confused on 3578. SRNJ roster lists them as having it, although the most recent picture of it (still in CN paint) is from 2007. My picture from 2008 shows it on the OC&T in NY&LE paint (NY&LE and the OC&T are owned by the same parent company). Did SRNJ just not update their web site recently and 3578 was sold? NY&LE's web site has no roster information, and OC&T only rosters a pair of S-2s in their paint scheme - I was actually disappointed that we didn't get to ride behind one of those, but I think the train was too long - I think there were 8 cars, plus the gon, plus we hauled a bunch of covered hoppers - a real mixed train! That or they were giving 3578 some test runs.

Randy,

The last pic I have of 3578 still in the CN paint is from 11/05/10. She wasn't sold but overhauled and repainted. Here's the pic from 11/10 and an additional one from 11/06/09. 3578 is getting alot of coverage.

For the guys who might enjoy some 1:1 railroading, the owner of this RS 1 had it painted up in his model railroad scheme. He had it stored at the Southern RR of NJ at Winslow, NJ till it was vandalized and he moved it .
