Josh, I don't think it has to be oak plywood. Just a good grade of regular plywood, snaded on both sides should work. Maybe around $30?

If you are going to cover the plywood facing with masonite, there is no reason to go to the extra expense of oak just to hide it. I think birch sells for about $30.00 a sheet at Lowes or Home Depot, maybe less at a local lumber yard. If you are going to cover up the plywood with masonite or even luan, you could probably use cdx for under $15.00 per sheet. If you are going to paint the face of the plywood, cdx and some spackle will make a smooth surface for paint.
