There aren't really any limits to what can be used for GERN rolling stock, and it needn't be limited to any particular era unless that's your preference. My own GERN operation uses boxcars from the '20s alongside covered hoppers from the '30s, '40s, and '50s - I like 'em, I run 'em. 
The most common ones used by GERN modellers are covered hoppers of various types and eras, followed by tank cars, boxcars, gondolas, and open hoppers. For '50s-era cars of a Canadian prototype, TrueLine's slab-sided covered hoppers are probably the most obvious (and most expensive) choice, but GERN buys and/or designs the cars they need. If you've got some odd-ball cars that you like but don't match your favourite prototypes, GERN's your solution.
