Trans-Unloading facility...perfect!
#1
I came across this Trans unloading facility while searching through Google maps.If you paste this address
6601 McKean Road, Ypsilanti, MI 48197 (NS trackage)into google maps then hit the search button you will see this facility,it's called "Bulkmatic Transport".If you look at all the hoppers,i'm guessing they are pressuraide hoppers, plastic pellet hoppers, etc, filled with all kinds of dry or liquid bulk goods waiting to be unloaded via semi truck and trailer.

My impression is that this type of facility was designed to unload railcars and it's bulk loads to trailers to service facility's that have no way of recieving product by rail(bakerys, injection molding plants, cement, etc)I noticed there are tank cars here also,i'm guessing corn syrup, vegetable oil, hydrogen peroxide?

I'm thinking this type of facility could also facilitate unloading of liquid propane?(have 4 -30,000 liquid propane tank cars)This facility looks quite easy to imagine a simple easy build on this one.Promotex makes a nice bulk container trailer that would work in this situation. Big Grin, although personally i'd like to see Athearn produce one, have you seen their new 53' semi-trailers?...anyway,Have have been considering adding a Bakery to my layout(10 Atlas corn syrup cars,4 vegetable oil cars,2 liquid sugar tank cars,6 -3 bay covered hoppers),I figure instead of building a large bakery,i figure why not included the rolling stock into a trans -unloading facility.

What do you all think? Smile

Ralph, thanks for the link! Big Grin I know the facility does look kinda large, but i think it could be built using your own dimensions.I noticed their is a large truck scale,to weigh the truck before it takes on it's load..Cool!Now if i could only find a manufacturer who makes those trailers in HO scale. Have run across some of their facilities at other locations when cruising with Google! Pretty neat operations and on some they have their own motive power. If you'll notice the building at the upper right of the facility, they are unloading corn syrup tank cars there. Also see chemical tank cars being unloaded on the left most track.

This would be a darn good facility for an ISL and of course doesn't have to be more than just a couple of short tracks, holding 3 or 4 cars each. Covered hoppers on one track, tank cars on the other with access roads on each side and between the tracks.

Like Don, wish I could find a source for the tank trucks that you see at these facilities. Closest thing I've got is a feed truck that I picked up years ago (Con-cor I believe).

Here's one for the joint Santa Fe Ry - Los Angeles Junction Ry Fruitland Yard in Vernon CA. It's now called Vernon Team Track. It's a Bing aerial birds eye shot looking west. The tracks in front are LAJ & in back ATSF. The LAJ's side does mostly covered hoppers (grain/pellets?) & the Santa Fe side does mostly steel products. All are hauled away by trucks. They are not connected but may be in future when LAJ crews take over switching the yard & the ATSF Malabar yard. Note the Santa Fe switchers sitting "in the shade". Will have a variation of it on my layout

Andy, that sounds very interesting to me. Could you please post some more information about possible future plans of the LAJ to expand it's operation? Plans LAJ to run the Malabar yard "as is" or is it planned to use it as an additional transfer point for the LAJ customers?

Hello guys!

I live in Brazil and this is my first reply.

Regarding the transloading theme, Is there any company who makes a HO conveyor belt for transfering bulk or grain from cars to trucks? Such device is often seeing among these facilities. It would be nice to have a model.

Tks!

Welcome Ricardo!

Walthers has an HO scale Bulk Transfer Conveyor and pit system http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3519. Appears to still be available.

If you're looking for a grain/feed/fertilizer type auger conveyor like this:     You'd have to scratch build it - but pretty easy to model.

Hope this helps.

Search for A & R Trucking in Joliet, IL. There is a large transloading facility there also.
