I had to hold the decal sheet at arms length and give it 2 lightcoats. It seems to have worked. It may also depend on the ink being used.

I suspect it worked because the clear coat was almost dry when it hit the decal sheet. At arms length, unless your arms are very short, the distance is probably twice what would normally be the recommended distance for spraying.

I didn't want to run the risk of pouring the clear coat on too heavy. I wanted more of a mist. The second coat was closer.
