Basement Finds
Posted by: eightyeightfan1 - 04-08-2009, 07:08 PM - Forum: Shutterbug area - Replies (4)

Was cleaning out the basement the other day. Getting rid of the stuff that had been water damged, chewed by the rats and mice. Most of the boxes had been down there since we bought the house eight years ago. One box, was off in the corner, buried by other boxes. When I opened it up to see what was in it, I found these. They were packed away for the move, stuck in the far corner, blocked by other boxes. only to be rediscovered eight years later.

The SD40-2, I think came from a Big Y Food stores anniversary set.
As you can see, some of the boxes hadn't even been open yet.

This is so far off railroad topics, but is so funny, Take a minute and watch, then smile, or laugh

 What's On Deck?
Posted by: TinGoat - 04-07-2009, 03:27 PM - Forum: Canada Rails - Replies (4)

Surfing around on Live Search Maps I found this in Bird's Eye View...

Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Eastern Inner Harbour, near Cherry Street and Unwin Avenue.

In the first picture you can see a longer view showing some Wind Turbine sections [Circled in Red]. Some parts are laying on the ground and a couple of pieces of the mast are loaded on trucks. In the Blue circle are a trio of EMD built British Class 66's waiting to be shipped across the Atlantic Ocean.

The next picture shows the Wind Turbines on the trucks

Here's a closer view of the British Class 66's

 NS RP Units
Posted by: Herc Driver - 04-06-2009, 03:45 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (21)

Can someone explain why NS just remodeled several older GP units into RP units? If I understand it correctly, these are units without motive power. So why are they needed at all? I haven't been able to find a good explanation on line as to what these units are used for and why. Thanks guys!

 Hull-Wakefield Steam Train
Posted by: RobertInOntario - 04-06-2009, 12:18 PM - Forum: Canada Rails - Replies (2)

The last I heard, there was a dispute regarding this railway (about track maintenance or something) and the steam engine was being offered for sale.

Well, today, I heard it advertised on a Toronto radio station! (The ad was actually for tourism in Ottawa and the steam train was listed as one of the Ottawa region attractions).

I just went to the railway's website and the images and graphics looks the same as they did several months ago. Just curious, does anyone know what happened? Were the issues resolved or did someone else buy the railway? Here's the link for their 2009 operating schedule:

http://www.steamtrain.ca/horaire_en.asp?onglet=4

So this gives me an incentive to organize a possible family trip to the Ottawa/Hull region! Goldth Big Grin

How to control a double cross over turnout.
Posted by: KentBy - 04-05-2009, 10:34 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (8)

Well I am putting one of these on my layout.

I decided that it would only make sense for all four points to either make both tracks run straight though or all four set to make both tracks cross over.

I experimented with some thin soft wire to see if I could move both points at one end.

This worked well, so next I bent some .032 piano wire to the same shape.

This one didn't work all that well. Pushing on the center of the bent wire took a lot of force to move from the closed (straight through) position to the open (cross over) position.

So I made the bent two pieces to make my shape. Each had a small loop at the center position.
