  Ralph's ersatz steel mill
Posted by: Ralph - 01-11-2009, 04:18 PM - Forum: Industries Along The Rails - Replies (14)

Val (Spitfire) is about to embark on constructing a steel mill from the Walther's collection and I know its going to be great! Some discussion of modeled mills prompts me to post these so I can link them to her thread without taking too much away from its original theme.

I built this mill a few years ago using cheap materials such as shampoo bottles, cardboard boxes, and corrugated craft paper. Had I known a little (or a lot!) more about steel mill operations I'd have constructed it differently with more realistic operations in mind. As it is I have a small yard in the complex that I call the "holding yard" where anything steel related such as coal hoppers, gondolas loaded with scrap metal, and coil cars can be set out or picked up. I pretend that the real switching of bottle cars, slag cars, hoppers and ore cars for the furnace, etc is done "off layout".

Here's what I've come to call my impression of a steel mill, an ersatz collection of structures that some day I'll probably re-do. Smile

This area is just a backdrop scene..

Closer now to the holding yard...

The furnace is visible in the background...

The holding yard that can also include boxcars for Kings Port Steel Supply...a vague facility that accepts deliveries for any materials that may support the industry via boxcar. I added this building because I had more boxcars than destinations for them. The brick building to the right is Canton Box Company.

larger boundry between avatar and post
Posted by: Sumpter250 - 01-11-2009, 01:45 PM - Forum: Forum Problems and Requests - Replies (5)

Pat,
In the area for avatar, joined date etc.. Is it possible to move the "start of line ?" a couple of spaces to the left, to create a larger divide between that information, and the "start of line" of the posted text? There appears to be only one character space between, right now, and there seems to be room to the left that could be used. Kind of like adjusting margins in print preview?

  If I can't read it, I won't!

OK, my minor rant for the day. Maybe it's aimed at you, but probably not. If it is, then take it personally, because you annoy the heck out of me! Curse Tongue

I find it hard enough to read messages on this board. The text colour (light on a dark background) is hard enough on my eyes, nevermind the technicolour headers, footers, icons and so-forth. Confusedhock:

If you haven't got the energy to hit the "shift" key and the period to start and end a sentence, or hit "return" to start a new thought, I haven't got the energy to wade through your stream-of-conciousness text to figure out what the heck you're talking about.

Unless you're e e cummings (which your writings suggest you definitely aren't) you've got no excuse except perhaps laziness or illiteracy. Since you can apparently spell more-or-less correctly, I'm guessing it's the former. Nope

You want help from people? Make it easy for people to help you. Type so people can read what you're saying. I have to read enough badly-written crap by allegedly educated people, I'm not going to waste my time trying to wade through yours when I'm trying to relax. Wallbang

Bah! Humbug! Arrrgh!.... And for all you bleeding hearts that think I'm being unfair and unreasonable, I just kicked a kitten and bit the head off a baby too! Tongue Icon_twisted

  New E-zine
Posted by: Russ Bellinis - 01-11-2009, 12:47 AM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (8)

I signed up for this new online E-zine. he first issue is out now and I just read through a couple of the articles, and skimmed the rest of it. Some of you guys might find it very interesting. I have been subscribing to and reading an automotive E-zine titled Winding Road for about 3 or 4 years. I wondered when someone would do the same thing with model railroading. For those worried about spam, the magazine makes it's money by selling advertising on the pages of the magazine just like Model Railroader, Railroad Model Craftsman, etc. Because it is online the cost of printing on paper and mailing is eliminated.
