As an afterthought I think I'll explain another reason for posting direct to the forum. If pictures are worth posting for the benefit of others then pictures posted direct to the forum will be there as long as the forum is operational. Who knows? I might change my domain in future years resulting in newcomers not being able to see the previously posted "linked" pictures.
I used to have my own site hosted by my isp and I'm sure I had linked pictures from it to the old Gauge. My isp disbanded their ftp enabled webspace so as to have their customers buy the isp's web designer program. I will NOT be held to ransom by marketing managers! Result:- All previously posted "linked" pics I made to forums was lost.
It is not for me to judge whether or not those lost pics were of value to anyone in particular but they included a couple of scale drawings for old time buildings and "how-to" articles.
