A pipe on each side of one tank would mean the tracks would have to be spread out with the tank in the middle.
In Perth, Ont., the tank/tower was at the east end of the eastbound platform, near where the locomotive would stop. There was a standpipe at the other end of the westbound platform. Passenger trains could be watered while passengers boarded/left the train.
