Great news at the Bowyer GERN Mine---a recent order for 3% more flux product will create more jobs and add a third shift for the plant. As a result a second locomotive will be required to move the continuous activity in the yard. The Leetown Division provides the power for this operation and has assigned recently outshopped 018A #7470 to assist P5 #8382 to handle the action.

  Trestle restoration
Posted by: cnrglen - 05-28-2023, 05:36 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (53)

Some may have remembered my Hemsley diorama restoration project that I did awhile back. That diorama was part of another modeller's layout who had passed away.
Now I have been given another part of that layout, his centerpiece trestle:

It was removed from his layout pretty much intact but was in storage for a couple years. a number of glue joints have come undone so I'll have to do some repairs. The larger job is to make a base/cradle for it to rest in.
I don't have the room on my layout to install it and it would almost be a crime to cut it down to make it fit.
This is what it looked like on the orgininal builder's layout:

Gap-less Turnouts, reducing wheel dips in turnouts
Posted by: railandsail - 05-24-2023, 03:51 PM - Forum: Scratchbuilding and kitbashing - All Scales - Replies (4)

Let preface this discussion by saying I have just built a fairly large
double deck layout in HO scale,...and utilized almost exclusively Peco
turnouts, which I consider to be some of the best commercial ones available.

Unfortunately I am a little dismayed when I have to shim and fiddle with
them to try to improve their tendencies to 'pick-a-point',... or drop locos
and cars into the chasms of the gap at the frog points.

I also like to operate both American product, and some foreign engines that
have slightly greater flange sizes.

Does anyone make, or try to make a 'gapless frog' turnout??

  Four Canadian Boxcars
Posted by: cnrglen - 05-20-2023, 11:03 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (10)

Taking a break from the layout for a bit, I've been working on a number of rolling stock projects. I seem to collect a lot of kits even though I already have the new layout pretty much full. I guess that's typical with Modeler though.

Starting from the front is a Proto2000 DD boxcar, built right from the box, Beside it is a 40' Boxcar from Front Range, Left rear is a Branchline Boxcar and the right rear is a Accurail Outside braced boxcar. The branchline car was a second-hand car, missing a ladder, I replaced them all with Tichy ladders and match the paint up as best I could. I bit of weathering and they should blend in. The accurail car will be a CP car with moderate weathering, something similar to what I did with a Proto stack car a while ago.

The DD boxcar will be wearing the CP 'script' scheme. CP had one such car as an experiment, painted in 1959 so it would be almost brand new on my layout.

Now the front Range car poses a bit of a challenge. Originally is was painted in Santa Fe but after I stripped it and repainted it the very fine panel lines on the car sides disappeared. I'm thinking of either drawing the panel lines in with a fine pencil or micron pen or masking and airbrushing the panel lines in with some darker brown/black.
Suggestions?

"Hello", that's all we expect here, just a way of knowing that you stopped by and that you're doing fine. No need for anything more. Got more to say, then stop by our "Hobo's Camp" and yap all ya want....

Note: you need to be logged on, and replies on this sub-forum are disabled so we don't get any discussions going here, a "hi", or "hello" would do just fine...
