Railroad "Boneyard"
Posted by: ezdays - 06-27-2009, 01:35 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (8)

For those of you that haven't yet seen it, the show, "Boneyard" will be airing the episode about recycling old railroad equipment. It will air tomorrow morning, June 28th on the HIST1 channel. Check your local listing, but it's on at 9 AM here in Arizona, so I'm assuming that it will be around noon on the east coast.

It's interesting. They show you how they recycle old rails and ties and even a locomotive and old car boneyard. They even go into how they restore old passenger cars.

 nachoman's 2009 kitbuild challenge
Posted by: nachoman - 06-27-2009, 10:24 AM - Forum: Contests & Challenges - Replies (11)

I went down to the LHS the other day to see if the remaining parts for my kitbash project were in - and they weren't. ALl was not lost, though - I picked up this kit of houses from Grandt line. I have been eyeballing this kit for years as these should be perfect little houses for a mining town. There are a few options when building these houses, but I will only use the pieces that are in the kit, and will not do any cutting or splicing of the walls. So, I guess that means I am in for the kitbuild challenge.

 tv_man's Scratchbuild Summer '09 Challenge
Posted by: tv_man - 06-27-2009, 04:43 AM - Forum: Contests & Challenges - Replies (8)

It seems that summer has started already. Time to unveil the plans for the scratchbuild challenge. As my layout is still without track, but with a fairly clear idea of the trackplan, any trackside structure would be of use, and a generic goods shed can be placed anywhere, so that's the direction I'll head to. Inspired by the 'NW 58th St., Miami' approach of a long, no-frills structure, I found the following structure: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... 1008105306 . It could probably be a bit older looking, as I want a branch-line look on my layout instead of a big-city industrial complex look, so I will probably mix in some older style architectural features like on this one: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1649787 or http://www.weimar-rastenberger-kleinbah ... efnord.jpg . I'll try to draw some blueprints which combine features of these three to give an idea of what is going to be built.

 Long crank pins
Posted by: nkp_174 - 06-25-2009, 12:19 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (13)

I've hit a bit of a snag on a project. I building an On3 2-8-0 with BLI's On30 C-16 drivers. Since the crankpins were out of scale...so far that I couldn't use them with scale 1880s style rods...so I filed them off. This hasn't caused any problems with 3 of the 4 axles, but the screws really aren't long enough for the main driver. Does anyone have a good source?

I'd try Bowser, but I don't want to shell out $12 ($10 min for shipping) for $2 worth of parts...if I can avoid it.

Since I know it isn't cool to mention such a project without a photo...

Btw, that is an old photo. I've done a fair bit of trouble shooting since then and the cross head guide is attached to the main rod.

 NEW Image Resource:
Posted by: Bob C - 06-25-2009, 09:18 AM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (2)

Hi, folks. Just got a heads-up from Google about a new source of Railroad images and info:http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/cd...=/knx_rail, from the Seymore Library at Knox College in Illinois (Galesburg ?). They are creating a digitized library of photos, documents, etc. - looks like a labor of love and a fine potential resource for those interested in mid-western rail history. Are you kidding - NO Institute of Higher Learning would affiliate with me - just wanted you to know ! Bob C.

I know this subject has come up before, maybe over at Z, but anyone know of good sites to get prototype photos to use as weathering examples?
