I know it was insanely popular over at the old site (and much fun), would anyone be interested in doing that here?

Here's an easy one to start us off: Western Pacific, a caboose, and number 430. There's 3 "easy's" to get us going.

I used this technique to make a river bank but it could be used anywhere you want to show rock stratta. the best part is that it is so EASY!! Materials needed: blue or pink foam, utility knife, paint. That's it.

First, carve the foam to the general shape you want:


Next use your knife to make horizontal slices in the foam. the more the merrier. After a while it will start to pull little pieces out (which is what you want) If the knife starts to "rip" the foam, change blades. It should look something like this:


I used a dark brown paint first on the recessed areas and then a lighter tan color to highlight the surface areas:


Other colors could be used like shades of gray:


You can also add sand, gravel,and greenery for a more finished look:


Finished scene:


Obviously there can be variations to the process....Sculptamold can be used here and there to blend it into the surroundings or cover the strata where ever you wish.

Hello to all my old Gauge friends - some of whom I have run into on other forums. I had pretty much given up on the Zealot business, so it really is nice to see the REAL Gauge back again. I sure do hope that many of the older members who left will find their way back here as well.

As for me, I'm still modelling in On30, still have nothing really in a finished state, as I seem to jump from one project to the next...can anyone identify with this? My layout is a freelanced Northern Canadian narrow gauge line that fictionally links the Yukon and White Pass with a (never built) extension of the Dolly Varden Mines railway. I'm hoping to incorporate some Y&WP equipment here and there, as well as some of the "Megill River and Lighthorse Railway", who uses narrow gauge equipment purchased from many different and eclectic sources, as well as home-built whenever possible.

As mentioned, I will be off for about 6 months as I have been accepted for training with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and upon successful completion (fingers crossed!) of 6 months of training, will be enrolled as a member. I'm not too sure what kind of free time I will have during this period, but will try to check in here and there.

How about a contest to come up with a fictitious Railroad and or place name? Max entry is 5 names per person. Prize none just an exercise in imagineering 8-)

I hope someone can help me with this- when I take pictures then look great in the camera viewer but when I upload them to my computer and to Photobucket they are grainy and not very sharp.I am using a normal setting on the camera.This has been an ongoing problem. I even contacted the manufacture who had me try a few things but nothing really changed. Does anyone have a clue as to why this might be happening? Thanks for any help-Bob

Here are some of the current pictures from my 2'x8' switching layout. These show the proposed location of the roads.
You will notice in the first few shots that I chose not to have the road cross the tracks.Rather in the front the road will end up in an that trucks can use to turn around in so the can back into the two industries on the front left side.




The last couple of shots show the road running from the left side all the way down to the coal tower at the far end.It also cuts off between two of the buildings and here it crosses the tracks to access the freight handling area.



I am planning on making the roads out of styrene. At this point I'm not sure if the roads will be asphalt or concrete,and the same goes for the parking areas and freight handling area.
