N-Scale Blast Furnace Kit Partially Complete, Coke Ovens
Posted by: nolatron - 03-11-2009, 01:40 PM - Forum: Swap Meet - Replies (3)

So as yall know I recently finished up the furnace house portion of Walther's Blast Furnace kit. However, the more I see the building on my layout and the more I plan out the mill, the more I can't help but think it's just too big of a structure for my layout. I mean, you can't even see the top 4 inches of the furnace because it's so tall. The fascia blocks it.

I really just think the these buildings and a still mill are going to just be too oversized for my layout and the space I have for it. This space really needs a smaller industry or two. So I'm going to abandon the Steel Mill project and will go back to the original "dairy" industry or perhaps use the superior paper plant here. These structures will fit and look better in the space available.

If you're interested in taking the blast furnace kit in its current condition and/or the coke oven kit (unopened) off my hands, please drop me a line.

I have a few of the tank components of the furnace also assembled but nothing glued to the main base yet. I'll supply the names of paint used so you can get the same kind so everything matches.

Coke Oven: $50 Shipped in US
Blast Furnace: $100 Shipped in US

International Shipping: Please contact for shipping quote.
Payment by paypal only as well.

If you're interested, lemme know.

Nscale Kato P42 Digitrax Decoder Install Problem
Posted by: Herc Driver - 03-10-2009, 10:18 PM - Forum: DCC - Replies (10)

Hi guys,

I tried to install a Digitrax DN163K0a decoder into my P42, but only the rear engine light illuminates when I put power to the track. I reprogrammed the loco's address to the road number, and verified that was done correctly, but I get no engine movement at all, only the rear light illuminating. It doesn't matter what direction the diesel faces either...only the rear light turns on about two seconds after putting power to the rails on my Digitrax Zephyr. I get no error or short circuit codes. I tried to reinstall the decoder three times, make sure I placed my kapton tape where called for in the directions, made sure the brass pickup strips were touching the metal tabs of the wheel trucks, and made sure the engine tabs were insulated from the brass strips by the kapton tape. What have I done wrong here? I checked both the Digitrax Decoder manual and the Zephyr manual but nothing really addresses this problem. I keep checking the engine's address and it keeps showing up as the right numbers. But I can't figure out why only the rear light is on when power hits the rails. I can't control that light...only watch it turn on by itself with track power.

Any ideas??????

  Athearn's SD50/60 Handrails are a pain....
Posted by: Trucklover - 03-10-2009, 08:15 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (3)

but they look pretty good in my opinion when painted and assembled on the models Misngth

Here are 2 of my CSX locos that i spend the whole day assembling and painting the handrails on lol

CSX #8706 SD60 known as the "Stealth" Scheme. CSX did a ton of different paint schemes back in the mid to late 80's. This was one of them. They didnt last long tho, and most had been repainted by the early 90's. So in a way, you could call this a "fantasy" paint scheme for the CSX.

Stealth units were all CSX gray from the walkway up and CSX blue from the walkway down. Some had the front and rear painted yellow with CSX Gray from the walkway up and CSX Blue from the walkway down, and some had the front, rear, walkway, and railings painted yellow while everything else was the same. Mine is like the second one described, with the front and rear painted yellow with CSX logos.

My other unit is #8503 SD50 in the "YN3" Paint Scheme, also known as the "Dark Future" Scheme. This scheme hit the tracks on in February of 2002. The Gray has been completely eliminated, CSX's new blue color (slighly darker then the old blue) and CSX's Gold are the new colors for the scheme. Black underframe and CSX Gold stripe's on the walkways, with CSX Gold tipped handrails, and both front and rear handrails are all CSX Gold.

Here are a few shots of both pulling a Woodchip Train Misngth

Now they just need a little weathering to hide the "shinnyness" of the handrails and paint lol

  loading coke

this looks like a hard way to load coke , from the photo i assume that the men on the ground level shovel the coke on to the hanging platforms then the men on the platform shovel it into the cars.

  question for a math wiz?
Posted by: e-paw - 03-09-2009, 07:03 PM - Forum: Lower Berth - Replies (14)

I was working on a diesel fueling platform today, eyeballing up the size of the storage tanks to look right for the project. I felt that 2 tanks for #2 oil were needed and 1 for lube oil would work out fine. I cut up some heavy card board cylinders to size, they will be covered by a styrene wrapper with rivet detail on it. Then I wondered what the capacities of the tanks were? I racked my brain for a while trying to remember some 5th grade geometry, it seams that my old age (35 35 ) has to crept up on me when I wasn't looking. I just can't remember how to find the square footage of a cylinder and convert it to gallons. Please help..... the measurements are : diesel fuel- 29 feet in diameter x 13 feet high
lube oil- 13 feet in diameter x 11 feet high

Thanks

  Business Train
Posted by: eightyeightfan1 - 03-09-2009, 06:29 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (47)

Business Trains.
UP has one, BNSF has one. CSX has one. NS has one.
Conrail HAD one.
The Central New England is getting one.

Someone from work gave me this old Athearn F7 shell. He just wanted the drive. I had a drive, with a chewed up shell.
The paint job on this was pretty bad. Lettering and color seperation was horrendous. At first I was going to improve the paint and replace the lettering with decals. Then I decided to make this the power for abusiness train.
